Northeastern: The Most Confusing Acceptance Package Ever

I am delighted to have been admitted to Northeastern (especially when the package came weeks ahead of the official notification date), but I am very confused with the scholarship package.

Okay, so as it stands, I have NOT been invited to the University Scholars Program. That is a bummer, since I received similar invitations elsewhere. I HAVE been invited to the Honors Program. However, there was NO indication for the NMF full-tuition scholarship. I have heard that those packages are sent later in March? But I also got the Dean's Scholarship with the highest subset possible ($20,000 freshman, $10,000 later on.)

That main question is, how does Northeastern take care of NMF? Should I wait? Have I not been awarded the scholarship? What is going on?

Have you officially gotten notification of the National Merit status?

Are you sure that your award is $20G first year and only $10G each year after , and not $10 per academic ( non co op ) semester ?
You could call fin aid office to clarify…they are pretty darn helpful there

If you have been named an NMF, then contact Northeastern and inform them, and they will tell you how to proceed. And if you get the NMF Full Tuition scholarship then that replaces the deans scholarship

It’s very likely what lje62 said. They (obviously) don’t give scholarships for co-op semesters, so they make sure to say your per-semester amount, not the per-year amount. However since you don’t do co-op your first year, then they can just tell the full amount.

My D received the same Dean’s award when she was admitted EA and I e-mailed someone in FAO, Benjamin Parsons, to ask about the NMF scholarship. He responded “As for your National Merit standing, once we receive official notice from NMSC that you are in fact a NM Finalist, then your package will be revised. We will not change financial aid packages until we receive that notice from NMSC, though, which is usually in February or March.” I don’t know quite how to interpret that, as the only way NMSC notifies them is if you make them your first choice school, so maybe then that is what they wait for. You will get it for certain if you attend. Don’t feel too bad about University Scholars. They only choose 50, I think. Many of them are really special kids who are not NMFs, since the NMFs already get a pretty good deal. There may be a few NMFs who get boosted into Univ. Schol., but not many.

Fax or email them your NMF letter. They should bump you up to full-tuition in March.

Or, at least that is what I am doing…

Should I just put that as an update?

from their website:

Admitted freshman applicants who are designated National Merit Finalists or National Achievement Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) are eligible to receive up to full tuition scholarships from Northeastern.* Scholarship recipients must be U.S. citizens or documented permanent residents, admitted to Northeastern and should designate us as your college choice to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation by April 13. We will award our first group of scholarships in early March to students who were admitted Early Action. In addition to designating Northeastern as your college choice, you may send Northeastern a copy of any certificates or letters that you receive from the NMSC for your admissions file. These documents can be submitted to Undergraduate Admissions via fax or email. Fax number: Undergraduate Admissions, 617-373-8780 Email: nationalscholar@neu.edu.

Northeastern National Merit and National Achievement Scholars will also be invited into The University Honors Program.

*Northeastern will combine any scholarship(s) which Finalists receive from NMSC with the Northeastern award to total up to full tuition. In 2012, approximately 100 National Merit Finalists and National Achievement Finalists enrolled at Northeastern with full-tuition scholarships.
