Northeastern Underranked?

Discussed colleges with my friends and this topic came up. What do you think?

It’s been getting A LOT better each year, and yeah - it’s underranked only moving up

Definitely. It’s nontraditional approach to teaching hurts it in rankings, like graduation rate due to the 5 year program, etc.

The only thing I don’t like about NEU is that I feel I was lied to about campus safety- yes, the campus has a call box on every corner and is heavily guarded, but look at a map which pinpoints where crimes occur. NEU is in the middle of a mass of crimes, and horrible ones too- teens gunned down on their ways to school, girl stabbed by father, etc.

There is some ranking somewhere on these boards that ranks the schools by SAT and GPA. That brings us I think to 51st so as far as quality of student thats about our ranking. On a side note NU was ranked about 5 spots better than BU.

jellxtoxthexo, I don’t think NEU misleads students into believing that the campus is safe because it is. I actually think it was ranked top 5 safest campus according to some magazine not quite sure which one. Columbus ave has NEU police station right on the street and the international village has the boston police station located right across the street. The actual campus itself is very safe with police officers on foot or bikes patrolling all the time. if you go about a half mile down, away from Notheasterns campus is where you can say the shady area (mission hill) might be but this is a subjective matter.

There are several colleges along huntington and it is dominated by students. Sure a couple crimes might happen here and there but its the city so i would expect that. the only thing that has really bugged me about NEU thus far are the high school students who cause a ruckus at the student center and the library but im pretty sure NEU police is cracking down on that as ive seen less and less.

It was ranked 2nd in safety by Reader’/s Digest, but that’s only based on preparation- not whether or not crime actually happens.

NEU/Huntington Avenue, according to city-data, is the part of Boston with the highest crime rate. I just find it misleading that NEU declares itself the second safest campus in the country, but doesn’t warn against the shady parts of the city until orientation.

I am very curious to see your statistic. You will find many students especially on weekends on Huntington Ave roaming around at 2-3 in the morning. I am absolutely certain that the crime areas are more geared towards the mission hill area near MCPH/longwood medical center. Northeastestern is located more closer to copley and prudential center.

In case that doesn’t lead you directly there, search best cities for crime rates, Mass, Boston, 5 mile radius. Then scroll through the entire list- NEU/Huntington is dead last.

I searched and couldn’t find the statistical data that you were looking at. Point is, is that Northeastern is safe and if you have a couple screws that are loose up there chances are your going to get yourself in harms way in any area, not just Boston. So don’t be oblivious to your surroundings and if you took a campus tour and walked around for yourself in and around campus you will see that Northeastern is gorgeous and has one of the best urban campuses in the country, if not the best.

When i visited, it did not seem dangerous at all if anything at times it almost felt like you weren’t even in the city due to how much green areas there were on campus.

Sorry, click the tab that says match then follow those steps.

I did tour the campus and I loved it, and it did seem safe. What I didn’t love was what I later researched.

I’m not saying the campus or surrounding area isn’t safe, I’m just saying I felt misled by the information given to me by the school.

“I’m not saying the campus or surrounding area isn’t safe, I’m just saying I felt misled by the information given to me by the school”

How were you misled… if the school said the area is safe, then it appears that you agree given what you have stated above.

Remember, NEU is in the heart of Boston. Stuff happens in the city. BU is located along the Charles River which is notorious for being a “dangerous” place to be late at night, alone, etc. Just like some of the areas surrounding NEU should be off limits to anyone with common sense, late at night.

Compare it to New York City, Philly, Pittsburgh, Chicago… you would be hard pressed to make the case that NEU is less safe than schools in these urban areas.

I am a very white female who lives in Mission Hill and I have never had any issues with safety. I walk alone regularly, I go out to bars in mission hill and walk home alone in the middle of the night. I mean, I wouldn’t walk around in heels and a slutty dress, waving my shiny new ipod around, but otherwise I have zero concern living on the hill or being anywhere in the northeastern area.

The school may be safe compared to schools in those cities, but I hardly think NEU is as safe as schools in suburbs or rural areas where crime rate directly outside of the campus is never an issue. It’s comparitively safe to other city schools, but second safest in the country? That’s based solely on preparation. We should be told that NEU is the second most prepared campus in the country, not the second safest.

Not to sound argumentative, but when I visited campus I was told they were “ranked as 2nd best safety preparedness”. When my parents asked a million questions about safety (since it was relatively soon after the Virginia Tech shootings when I visited), they clearly told us that there are areas nearby that you shouldn’t go into alone, but campus is fine so long as you aren’t totally lacking common sense. I’m a complete whimp (and a white female), and the only times I’ve felt weirded out enough that I might consider it unsafe was when I was ages away from campus late at night in Dorchester (volunteering) and once when I was walking to the movies (more near BU than NEU) and a homeless guy pestered me quite a bit for money until my boyfriend told him to leave me alone.

this thread is off topiccccc…

I don’t go to NEU, but I’ve been doing a lot of research on this school and it seems to me that it is definitely underranked, as others have said. Generally what is most important after your undergraduate education is either getting a good job or getting into a good graduate program. Experience seems to help you much more than theory in both of those scenarios, and with NEU’s Coop program, good experience is easier to get. I would think the Coop program is what really makes NEU valuable.

I wouldn’t have written on this thread (due to lack of personal experience), but the OP’s question interests me and I’d like to see the thread get back on topic as well.

All I know is that if it weren’t for Northeastern, I wouldn’t have my girlfriend, wouldn’t have gotten published in the first textbook in sustainable chemistry experiments, and wouldn’t have gotten a coop at arguably one of the most important companies in the world all by the end of my sophomore year. Does this have to do with rankings? maybe not. But did Northeastern provide me with opportunities that I would not have gotten elsewhere? Absolutely.

Northeastern offers the same opportunities that are offered at top schools, if not better, whether it be internships or research. Yeah I think were underranked but then again who cares? it’s a self selecting school and students come here becuase they realize that NEU will offer them the best all around college experience. I chose Northeastern because I felt that it offers the best resources to students relative to other schools.

Underranked no doubt.
