Northeastern University Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2023 Admission

Read the link below (and posted earlier)… best to list NU as your top choice by deadline of April 2. Given that you are already at their highest merit amount, I would not expect a while lot more…
Congrats.

I would also contact FA asap to discuss this. They may make a decision pretty quickly for you as the deadlines are getting close.

Didn’t get any other aid except the NM Scholarship. I kind of wished we had filled out the CSS just to have that be considered.

Thank you for giving the CC world a very detailed understanding of your process in dealing with your path to NEU. As @LoriMachOrtiz was told, there are (were?) no pathway change options… but I wonder now if NEU has to soften/adapt that policy, because evidently there ARE options for switching. One of my DD’s good friends had to spend her first NEU semester in Scotland. It was a scary and difficult choice for her and her family, as she wanted to be in Boston like most everyone who applies to NEU. She was ALSO informed that her offer was the only one she would get for acceptance. Interesting info for future reference and future applicants; your process is extremely well-documented here on CC.

Thank you! Been a long and arduous journey but I’m so happy it all worked out! /happily

The OP is a unique case with medical documentation. It does not set a precedent for students who simply want to start in Boston instead of the other locations.

Indeed, well aware. Just nice to know that NEU is open to candidates appealing their policy.

How did you request a pre-read for ED?

I contacted the Student Financial Office at Northeastern asking the same question and got the following response last week

“Thank you for contacting SFS. It is too early for us to provide information for the Fall of 2024. Admissions will provide more information on obtaining an estimate of aid when they begin the admittance process for that academic year.”

I will reach out again the first week of August.

It was offered in, I think, September. Be on the lookout for it because a lot of people missed it, and it was only available for a few weeks. Have all your financial info needed for the CSS ready.

Hopefully, they offer it again!

I will have to reach out in May too! I have one that is a recruited athlete and her twin will also be applying ED.

This is on the Northeastern website

  • Application Fee Waiver: Students applying for Early Decision I or Early Decision II and applying for Financial Aid will be eligible for an application fee waiver.

  • Early Need-Based Financial Aid Estimate*: In order to provide you and your family with the ability to make an informed financial commitment, we are committed to providing you with an early estimated need-based financial aid review. To receive yours, you must submit the following by Wednesday, October 25.

    • An application to Northeastern for Fall 2024 via Common App or Coalition App. Please note an Early Decision application is not required for the review. All application types will be able to receive an early aid review if students are considering a change to Early Decision.
    • Your 2024-2025 CSS Profile (and NCP Profile if required).
    • The early aid review request. Please note, this will be available for all Fall 2024 domestic applicants on October 2 via their Application Status Check.
    • Any additional financial aid documents (such as federal tax returns) that may be required by Student Financial Service.
*This offering is for domestic students only as international applicants do not qualify for need based aid.

Why would anyone still scope ED then? It seems like a waste of an ED if you don’t get your first choice? I’m certainly not sending my kid to Oakland or London for $85k?

Northeastern is trying to protect its yield. They are accepting a much higher % in ED for Boston.
If Northeastern is your #1 choice ED gives you a much better chance of acceptance. If you do not get into your number 1 choice campus for ED this is not binding.

Yes I totally get this. But if you ED to Boston, then they should honor that campus choice. If they don’t honor the campus choice and at that point it’s not binding, then it doesn’t help their yield. Makes no sense.

I’d say NU accepts those they feel are an absolute good fit to the Boston campus and/or certain majors right away up to maybe 50% of the frosh class. Many ED students are also deferred to regular decision as well and then accepted. If your child is not accepted to Boston directly in ED, but offered a different entry pathway, and that all they’ll accept is Boston, then they just reject NU’s offer.

There are many students that are thrilled to get acceptance to NUIN or global scholars as those are delayed entry to their top choice. NU has gotten so competitive in the last few years and I would expect it to be the same. NU did offer some entry to Oakland or London full time as well last year as those were new… again, you just reject it if that is not acceptable to you.

I believe the ED acceptance rate has been about 35%. I would look at it as some of the 65% of ED candidates who don’t get in as Boston start are offered an alternative pathway.

They are concerned with yield, but they don’t take everyone who applies ED or use up all the spots ED. If they didn’t have so many other options, the students would simply be rejected.

It’s tough because ED has much better odds, but applicants need to really consider where they want to use it. It should be a school that is their absolute first choice and they are in the mix of where the data shows accepted students.

Hi, congrats on your daughter’s accomplishments! My son is applying somewhere else for ED1 and was going to apply EA to NEU with Boston as home base. He has a 35 composite, 36 superscore, 4.0 gpa 6 APs, several honors and several dual enrollments and decent/good ECs. We are full pay, but also want to see some possible merit. Can I ask what your daughter’s stats were and what school she applied to within NEU? My son would like business. Thanks so much in advance. My son is being convinced by his counselor and the admissions presenters to do ED2 instead of EA which may be a mistake. I have heard you can switch to ED2 if you are deferred EA.
