I just got accepted to the NEU Honors College, and even though I didn’t apply for financial aid, received a “Northeastern University Honors Scholarship”.
What is this scholarship? How selective is it? Does everyone who gets accepted to the Honors Program get this?
The Honors scholarship is merit aid. It is pretty selective as Northeastern seems to be leaning more towards need based grants recently.
how many people receive it?
@sciGirl123 I believe everyone who is accepted to the Honors College receives it although it can vary slightly in amounts. I was just accepted with 30k, while two of my friends were just accepted with 27k
Does anyone know if you still get the scholarship if you decline the Honors college?
Why would anyone deny honors college?
I was awarded 30k via the Honors scholarship and anticipate becoming a NMF.
Northeastern’s NMF scholarship, however, “will supersede and replace your University Honors Scholarship.” How much is the NMF scholarship worth? I’ve heard up to 30k, so what if my NMF is less than my Honors scholarship?
@huttens Then you will only get the Honors scholarship. Honors also includes an extra grant towards international study or coop.
My daughter received an Honors scholarship but it is low compared to most other people we know who were accepted. She was offered $12,500 per semester and it didn’t say anything about grants towards international study or coop. If she declares for the NMF scholarship, will the amount of her offer go up? Is there any way to gauge this, because their scholarship description page states up to $30000 for NMF. It does not state that is a guaranteed amount.
@G8tr2mom - You will have to talk to FA about the NMSF scholarship. In the past, it has seemed that most NMSF and NHRP did indeed get the $30k once they declared NEU their top school, but this year it does seem that at least some NHRP recipients on this page are to date only getting $15,000 per year. Your D so far has $25,000 per year which is great so it could get bumped up to $30k or they may not. It could be a matter of yield, in that if they know she will attend NEU, they may provide that bump. You can find your D’s FA advisor here: https://studentfinance.northeastern.edu/contact-us/counselor-lookup/ . They are always super helpful.
Out of curiosity, how much were other Honors’ scholarships you are comparing it to? (I wonder if they are looking more at need this year than just merit?)
My daughter’s friends were all awarded between $30,000-$40,000 annually. Most received between 15,000 to 17,500 per semester. I don’t know if the one person who received the 40,000 had any financial aid combined with that. My daughter doesn’t feel comfortable asking if there were any extra grants listed like the $6000 for a 1st year dialogue typically included in past years.
I would be cautious about what kids or parents say about scholarships. They will typically quote the bottom line and combine merit and need based aid. You can check the accepted student replies on this forum - but I think $30,000 a year is the max merit only I have seen. ($15,000 per semester)
@kiddie actually looking back through the threads there are number of honors scholarships posted at $35,000, $17,500 per semester and one I saw for $40k. Hard to tell what the criteria might be. When they stopped the University Scholars program, they said they would be improving the honors program. Hard to see any changes, but maybe this is one… adding more scholarship money across more honors students.
@G8tr2mom the $6000 global scholarship money does not show up on a FA letter but usually is mentioned in the admission letter welcoming one to the Honors Program, or was in the past. It is not guaranteed, as you need to keep a certain gpa and it can only be used for certain programs like doc fee, global coop, etc. Check your admissions letter for more info.
When my daughter got the $6,000 global money offer it was in a separate physical letter in the admissions package mailed to her. This was back in 2012 and it was a little more restrictive (not for global coop).
I agree, I haven’t seen any improvements in the honors program (even after the newest honors program director was appointed maybe a year ago.) Remember University Scholars was free tuition as was National Merit at the time. In concept, by eliminating those they should have freed up more merit money to go around?
@kiddie Any merit money freed up likely went to more need based aid.
This is directly from the Honors agreement in the package regarding the global opportunity perk.
· a $6000 Global Bank Account that they may access to fund selected global experiences, beginning Fall 2019.
· $3500 of the Global Bank Account may be used to cover expenses incurred during a Global Co-op.
· The remaining $2500 may be used to cover expenses incurred during any type of global experience offered by Northeastern, including:
o Dialogue of Civilization
o Global Co-op
o Alternate Spring Break experience
o Global research
o semester or summer study abroad
Please note that tuition costs remain the responsibility of students; students are advised to consult their student financial services officer to determine if financial aid may be applied to help cover these tuition costs.
@jhugge Nice that they allow the funds to be used for study abroad or alternative spring break now too. A little more flexible which is great.
@jhugge - was that information about the $6000 part of your admission letter? I’m confused as to where you saw that.
@G8tr2mom If you look in the portal there is something under Next Steps that says Honors Agreement. Open that and it is in there.
