As a prospective National Merit Finalist, I was looking around at the scholarships offered by schools and saw that Northeastern offers a full ride for National Merit Scholars but that the award is competitive. I'm wondering what the criteria are to get the scholarship and just how competitive the process is?

I have spoken with NEU about this and they say if you follow the rules and name them first choice by their deadline you will receive up to full tuition. In all the years past everyone gets full tuition. Somewhere I read they have 100 NMFs right now- not sure if that’s freshman or all years though.
It seems they dont want to guarantee it (until you choose them as first choice) though in case one year they get too many NMFs perhaps?

Alright, thanks! Do you know what their deadline is?

This year it’s 4/12/13

Sorry, but one more question. Is that for this year’s graduating class or 2014?

and saw that Northeastern offers a full ride for National Merit Scholars but that the award is competitive

I don’t think NEU’s scholarship is a “full ride”. I think it’s for “full tuiton.” A full ride would cover tuition, room, board, and books.

at this point, we wouldn’t know if that offer will still be good for next fall’s applicants.

good catch mom2collegekids- it IS a full TUITION scholarship only. That date is for this year’s class of 2013.

My son’s National Merit Scholarship is showing on his my neu portal this morning!

Congrats Bethorama33 did he name NEU first choice already??

He did list Neu as his First Choice. Neu said that once they receive the student’s name on a list from NMC as listing Neu as their First Choice they will adjust their Financial Aid. NMC sends the lists every couple weeks starting at the beginning of March.

Congrats Bethorama33, D also list NEU as first choice before Mar. 1, hoping she also got it!

Good luck Ohiolin let us know when she gets the full tuition! :D

In 2011 we checked into this and were told it was guaranteed, even if more than 100 NMFs named them first choice. Of course no one should depend on that old info – call or write and get the current details for yourselves.

Son changed his NMF first choice to NEU from undecided on the evening of 3/15 and faxed a copy of the certificate a few days later.

He called NMF today and they said notification to universities will be sent out again on 4/12 and were sent out last on 3/15. He also called NEU today and they said they were doing a batch in April. I am stressed about him cutting things so close and he is relaxed since he feels everything was done on time.

In the past did NMC update more then once a month?

I’ll likely be named a NMF this year, and I’m thinking about applying there next year. I’m trying to decide between Baylor, Fordham, or here. I know that the former two schools are noncompetitive full tuition scholarships, but I’m not sure about this school. Does anyone know if the scholarships here are competitive? And are they automatically worth full tuition?

Did NMF get full scholarship for class of 2017? My son applied early action for the class of 2018. He got an acceptance letter with $18,000 Dean’s Scholarship and the admission said that it will be replaced with $30,000 NMF scholarship once he designates NU as the school of choice.

@althea, yes, I am pretty sure that this is the first year that the NM scholarship is not full tuition. When you say “the admission said…” do you mean that his admission or scholarship letter said that, or you contacted the admissions office and they said that?

The tricky thing with Northeastern is that they have also made their designation deadline earlier than many other colleges (April 11, I believe) and before our April vacation, so my son won’t have had time to visit any of his RD schools before deciding whether or not to designate Northeastern. Most schools have an April 30th deadline, so you can designate a school when you’ve actually made the final decision as to where you are going?

A few I know are disappointed about the drop from full tuition. They don’t add other scholarships so 30k is it without financial aid. I can’t go on Feb 8 admitted students day but have to visit IF I get finalist. So the early notification on top I of that cuts it close. Is NU trying to limit finalist who come because they have gotten so many in recent years? That was suggested on that board…that the honors program grew faster than they hoped because of so many finalist taking the full tuition and honors program offer.

hsgrad, do you have a reason to suspect you might not make finalist? Most semifinalists make it.

@mathmomvt, I emailed the admission and that was the reply I got. If the designation deadline is 4/11, can you make NEU #1 choice, visit the campus, and then change the designation if your son doesn’t like the school? My son applied thinking he will get a full tuition (another school he applied because of NMSF status was UCF), but since out of pocket costs will be around $30K, I don’t think he will consider going. We are from California, so if the costs are similar to UC’s ($30K including room and board), he said he will rather go to UC’s than NEU.
