Northeastern university of ohio~ BS/MD

i just found out about this college and was wondering if any of you could give me some info on it.
i believe they do not want an essay (?). should i send it in anyway?
and also, how selective is it for non-ohio residents?
do you think it is a good program?
oh and by the way, it is a 6-7 year BS/MD program...

I applied early to this program - NEOUCOM - and the preliminary app requires no essay or rec or anything - just EC's and SAT/ACT scores. They don't even want SAT II's. You can apply through NEOCOM to one, two , or all three of the affiliated universities - Youngstown State, Kent State, or Univ. of Akron. Based on your prelims, they call you for an interview at the campus. I'm out of state, and i got an interview at ysu only - i was deferred by the other two. As far as i coud tell, that's what happened to everyone from out of state who applied EA and got an interview. They sent a supplementary app along with the interview notice that had to be completed in about a week. The EA decisions are being mailed out on Dec. 11 - and that's about all I know:) Don't know whether it'll be any differnt for RD applicants, but i do know this -

There is a lot more competition for out-of-state kids. The thing is, the program was created to supply to dwindling population of physicians in ohio with kids ready to go out there and be doctors. It's really tough for out-of-state kids to make it in these days, esp. bc they know that a lot of o-o-s kids who apply use it as a back-up bs/md, won't necessarily accept if they get in, and probably won't stay in ohio. That spot would be much more useful to an ohio kid who , even better, will only have to pay in-state tuition to go there. In the past two years of YSU, i know from the interview, there has been one oos student in a class of 35.

Hope this helps!

thanks for the fast reply meadle24390 !
um one more question, did you apply to all three?-kent uni, uni of akron, and youngstown state?
i was planning to only apply to youngstown state uni.
also, could you please post your stats. and do we have to go for the interview? is it mandatory?

and, once we are in, we dont need to take MCATs -is that correct?

Yeah, i applied to all three (got interviewed at ysu and deferred to the other two - and actually, that happens to all oos's i think)
I thought it would boost my chances, but i'm not sure. I can't tell you if their os policy will change for RD

You do have to take the MCATs, but you only need a 24 or something - don't quote me on that, though! And you get several chances to retake it ad they give practice tests, etc.

Stats - all they're really worried about for the prelims are sat/act

hmm well do you think it is a good program? i mean, would it worth going there if i get accepted and not to the other bs/md programs?

oh and did you get interviewed by phone or did you actually go to that college for the interview?

gldfishwrld, you have to go to each consortium university (ua, ksu, ysu) for the interviews.

oh and my brother-in-law was a 2003 graduate of NEOUCOM...he was an OOSer and went to YSU, and there was one other girl that was OOS in his class (so don't worry! it's possible to get in and not be from ohio, after all!)...it's kinda weird how only YSU takes the OOSers, it's been a huge trend

and meadle24390, are you from michigan? i think i met you at the YSU interview, haha. is NEOUCOM your first choice?

thx for the reply singinsweetie2290!
lols yea i am a little worried. i just found out about this yesterday so i kinda have to rush in the applications and transcripts..
um, also, did your brother-in-law like the NEOUCOM? and how did he do on the usml, and then in the residency. is he currently in ohio?

lol, singinsweetie, i'm from indiana. I met 2 ppl from michigan, though - where are you from? NEOUCOM isn't really my first choice, just bc i'm from oos and i really want to go to a city - i'd really like to get in, though, so i have some options:)

gldfsh - I met one of the students currently in NEOUCOM at the interview, and am still in touch with him, and he really seems to like it. And I really liked the dorms!:) (meaningless as it may seem, i think it's prety important:))

oh so the dorms are good? yea, lols i think it is important too
by the way, the individual you met at the interview, which grade is he in right now? and was he a o-o-s? do you mind if you could send his email to me?

Anyone interview at Kent? Dorms aren't so great here, lol.
O yeah, and we have out-of-staters in our class from Mich., Cali, Minnesota, Wisconsin, so it is a possibililty. It depends on the applicant pool for that year.

mere: i suppose you are going to kent uni.? are you a o-o-s too? which grade are you in right now? how is it like going to college in the summer too? lols do they go easy on you during the summer?

ok i have a question about sending the official SAT score report through collegeboard. i didnt get my november sat score and it says they will start mailing it on dec. 8th. is NEOUCOM suppose to have the score by december 15th?? and also if my school send an official score report would they accept it? i need to know if they are suppose to get it by december 15th though...

I suppose whenever the date they say it is supposed to come, it should be there. I am not aware of these date issues because I took the old Sat. They will prob not take an official school report, they need the College Board form. I am a second year at Kent (C2), I am from Ohio, and the summers are fine. Other schools take Calculus and Chemistry during the summer at an accelerated pace, but Kent is a bit different. Check out the curriculums at the NEOUCOM site.

what has life been like for you? stress-wise, fu-wise, friends-wise

hmm. stress wise-same as a premed but a little less bc you still want to do well, but you dont have to do as well. fun-wise-same as any other undergrad. friend-wise-great connections with program people at all levels of the program, as long as you initiate

"thx for the reply singinsweetie2290!

haha, no problem! and really, don't worry...you've done all the hard work these past 4 years and it'll definitely pay off! there's nothing you should be stressing over now...just get in those applications and you'll be fine.

actually my brother-in-law and my older sister were 2003 graduates of NEOUCOM, so i'm pretty familiar with the program :-) they both really liked it, in all three aspects: studies, living accomodations/atmosphere, and social life. both my sister and brother-in-law passed their boards (all three) the first time and thought that they were really well prepared for the MCAT. my sister got married this summer, so she moved to Pennsylvania to practice, where my brother-in-law has started his fellowship (they're both done with residency in Internal Medicine)

singinsweetie2290
oh wow so you pretty much know a lot about NEOUCOM then. lols. btw are you from ohio or o-o-s?
also, which other 6 or 7 year programs are you applying to?

yeah, i definitely know my NEOUCOM :-)

i've looked at a bunch of other 6-7 year programs, but i like NEOUCOM the best. this site has a bunch of them if you want specifics

good luck!

oh, and i am from ohio by the way, lol
