Northeastern University Transfer Thread Fall 2017

@Dontskipthemoose Coops are generally six months. With planning you should be able to graduate in 24 months, assuming you can transfer in 64 credits. In the summer between years you will be on coop and/ or in class. But each person’s situation is unique.

will we hear back this friday or next friday?

@PengsPhils @TomSrOfBoston I know this is silly but is NEU considered a “good school”? I have family who are BU alumni and they’ve been bashing it: saying that it cheated it’s way through U.S. News ranking and that the co-op program is mediocre at best and doesn’t help you any more than an internship does. Obviously, both of you are probably biased towards NEU but I just wanted some insight to whether NEU is “worth” it?

@TomSrOfBoston is actually an alum of both I believe (BU for grad school?).

BU doesn’t like that the schools are seen as peers now basically is the story. BU is a school that prides itself on its international academic reputation and being a global university in that sense. Northeastern’s rise is in part due to co-op and a changing of focus in education from pure academics to both personal and career development. Both schools, of course, have benefitted from their location in Boston. The difference in philosophy leads to different views of what is “better”.

As far as US News goes, I’m sure you’re aware of at least the general of the what and why there, but long story short, bring anyone from BU or NEU before 2000 to campus or on a tour and they will immediately see the difference. Thre school has truly gone through a transformation, and quickly, which is another factor for the resistance of others. Very few schools choose to go from a big portion commuter school to a nearly fully residential one in that short of a time.

The current reality is that the same caliber of students attends both but the schools offer very different educational philosophies. A bunch of alumni of a rival school calling co-op “mediocre at best” is clearly coming from a very different viewpoint, when in terms of schools for your career development, the co-op program is widely respected and known as one of the best for it. A valid objection is for someone who isn’t interested in the philosophy. It’s not an objection against the whole program. Co-op is usually the #1 reason for those attending.

ProudTerrier 's view there is what I would call a fair and current view of an alumni at BU.

@PengsPhils is correct. What many do not realize is that until the 1960’s BU was a commuter school with a small contingent of on campus students, The same with BC until the 1970’s. BU has a greater research portfolio due in large part to its medical center.

I liken the attitude to “Barbarians at the Gate”. Established schools do not ike the idea that other schools are challenging the status quo. The same could be said about USC, WUStL and even the venerable University of Chicago, each at their own level. How dare they consider themselves as our peers!

As for Northeastern it has always been unique in requiring out of he classroom off campus experiences. In the past that was seen as contrary to the nature of the “traditional; college experience”. In the past couple of decades that has changed. Many applicants to Northeastern are uncomfortable about not having a 3 month summer vacation, that they will either be in school or working full time in the summers. Well, the world has changed and it is about having a competitive advantage.

BTW the BU campus of 1969 would have sent most of today’s potential applicants running away.

Do you guys think we’ll hear back tomorrow? From last years thread they heard back this upcoming Friday

@redpucca I hope so! But I doubt it, some people heard back last Friday and I think Northeastern releases decisions in waves every two weeks…so we can expect the decisions to come out 5/19, 6/2, and 6/15.

How’s everyone’s financial aid looking?

@cubsfan11 I haven’t recieved mine yet.

If I don’t hear back by next Friday (the anticipated next wave) then I’m probably going to have to call them because I cannot wait until June for them. I’ve applied to 3 other schools for transfer

Looks like we’re waiting till next Friday…oh well. I really hope I hear next week because I was accepted into BU which has a deposit deadline of June 1st. I’d rather go to NEU over BU so hopefully they’ll rush my decision if asked.

Why would you rather go to NEU? @TinaEng

@koreanincali sorry for taking so long to answer! I’m not sure what the equivalent is in the US but I did the IB in high school and got 39 points, and now I was in college in Europe and our grading system is very different to yours. I would say the my high school grade was very good, my college grades were good but not amazing, I had 113 on my TOEFL, but I think what really made a difference was my essays. Also my extracurricular were quite good. Would be awesome to meet you but I got into NYU and I think I’m going there

@PengsPhils @TomSrOfBoston Thank you for the detailed responses, and I apologize for not responding sooner. I think it’d be difficult to convince my family to let me attend NEU despite these facts, since it is an expensive school and they don’t see it being “worth” the money since its not “prestigious” enough. I’d really love to go if I’m accepted, but who knows–maybe I’ll be rejected and I won’t have to talk to them about this! I was wondering but, since I’m an international student won’t my options for co-op be limited?

@MCB0710 if you don’t mind me asking, what was your college GPA and what extracurriculars did you do? I Also applied to NYU

Has anyone in Computer Science heard anything yet?

I got into D’Amore McKim, but I won’t be attending. Hopefully this will open a spot for someone on the waitlist or still waiting to hear.

To those who have been accepted- If you feel comfortable sharing, could you please say if you received any scholarship money, grant money, etc… Just trying to get a gist of what NEU is like with financial aid.

Hopefully a wave of decisions come out today. Still my top choice. Good luck everyone who is still waiting!

Does anyone know around what time decisions today should come out?

@redpucca it was delivered by 4 pm in the past years. Fingers Crossed!
