I want to go into business, probably finance or international business.

For Baruch, I would get full tuition for four years and it's a pretty respected business school, right behind NYU and Columbia. Since I live in NYC, I would commute from home everyday. I like my family and don't really mind living with them, and I've commuted to high school from Queens to Manhattan for the past four years so I'm already used to it, even though it would be fun to get the full college experience in Boston.

For Northeastern, the only financial aid I got was $3,400 in grants and $2,750 in loans, so I'd have to pay around 45K a year, not factoring in any money I would earn from co-ops.

I think as an overall school, Northeastern seems to have more prestige than Baruch, and I'd be able to dorm and have the traditional college experience, and I'd benefit from the co-ops, but I don't know if that's worth justifying a 45K difference.

If I plan to work in the field of business in NYC after college, which school would lead to better job opportunities?

thanks =)

Northeastern guarantees you a job. Some of loan will be paid off by the time you graduate. Looks like your EFC is high. Go for the college experience. Live in dorms, not at home. NORTHEASTERN !

On a second thought, if you have to go on a huge debt then CUNY. Baruch is well respected in the northeast. The only problem is you will commute from home. You will be missing out on a very important part of life which will never come back. EVER !

The schools are relative equals in NYC and the heavy costs aren’t worth it

Northeastern is a much better program than Baruch. It is a bit more expensive but you can also take into account the paid co-ops and the fact that you’ll actually graduate with a job.

Also, I think you’re overestimating Baruch. I’ve never heard it compared to NYU, Columbia or other top notch business schools.

Good luck.

Baruch is roughly comparable with schools like Northeastern, Fordham, Syracuse, etc. The $180k in debt is not worth it. This is a pretty easy decision.

I’m facing a similar decision(northeastern vs Macaulay honors at hunter) but I got a full tuition scholarship from northeastern. I think that if money is a large factor, and you plan on working in NYC, and you can motivate yourself to seek out internships and research opportunities on your own, then Baruch would be the better option.

Where, exactly, would that $45k for next year come from, as well as the more than $45k for each of the following years (cost of attendance is certain to rise, usually by 5% to 7% each year)? You can only borrow the federal loans of $5,500 freshman year, $6,500 sophomore year, $7,500 junior year, and $7,500 senior year. Which is not going to make much of a dent in the cost of Northeastern. If your parents have buckets of money, and are happy to give you four years at Northeastern as a present, it is up to them. On the other hand, they (and you) may have many other ways you’d like to spend that amount of money. For example, as seed money for your own business that you’d like to start one day.

Baruch is in NYC. Northeastern is not. Guess which group of students finds it easier to pin down part-time jobs and internships in NYC. For a business major, whose career goal is to work in NYC, I’d think that would be the deciding factor.

Baruch is cheap enough, that a semester abroad or as a visiting student at another college or university in the country (even one as expensive as Northeastern) would not necessarily break the bank. Think about that too if you would like to have some “away college” experience.

wow, I am facing the exact same decision of Northeastern vs. Macaulay Honors Baruch. I got a $20k scholarship + FA to Northeastern so I would have to pay $34k to attend. If I attend NEU, I wouldn’t really be going into debt but my parents really want to save up those $135k for other uses such as graduate school. I also made my own thread but I guess this one works too since I am in the same boat as bunniesrcool.

@Jazmine: are you choosing Macaulay Baruch or Northeastern?

I was accepted to Macaulay Hunter but I really like Northeastern. I will most likely choose Northeastern(I’m 99% sure I will) because I think I will be afforded many more opportunities. Plus, if I change my major, I can be assured that Northeastern will be strong in all aspects, while Hunter is really only strong in the sciences and public health. I also prefer Boston to NYC, and the social life at NEU would be more favorable for me. Either of you can PM me if you want to continue a conversation, but I hope you both make the right choice!

Sorry for typing the wrong school name.
Why do you prefer Boston to NYC? Wouldn’t there be more internship opportunities in NYC in general? (although Northeastern does have a very famous co-op program).
Right now, for me, its a matter of sacrificing a better social life and prestige for a good amount of money.
btw, congratz on Northeastern and on making your decision Jazmine!

No problem! And thanks but for me, I love Boston’s atmosphere. I’ve grown up in Westchester county and never found much appeal in New York City. I love the vibe of Boston and its a cleaner, cobblestone filled New York City(in terms of being a popular city.) I love the semi historic feel of boston and I think that it connects me to the past, rather than the over industrialized, ultra modern fashion that makes up a lot of NYC.

Also, I’m not entirely sure if I will work in NYC all of my life(or if I will at all) and Macaulay is only really known in NY, while Northeastern is becoming more and more known(Northeastern even attracts many international applicants as well, now.) Northeastern’s coop program and prestige may help in getting jobs all over the country. Lastly, I need to go out of my comfort zone, out of NY and truly feel independence- which I would not at Macaulay because my parents are very strict. I wish you both the Best with your decisions!

Sorry to go off topic from OP’s first post, but is it really true that Hunter is only strong in the sciences and in public health? I thought it was strong in the liberal arts, in general. S also got accepted at Macaulay Hunter, and there’s a very, very good chance that that’s where he will attend. He’s not interested in the sciences or public health, though, so it’s a little disconcerting to read that they’re the only areas in which Hunter is strong.

Back to topic, bunniesrcool (and we have a house bunny, btw!), I do not in any way, shape, or form think it would be worth it to spend that much more money to attend Northeastern instead of Baruch Honors. Unless your family has A LOT of extra money laying around and doesn’t mind spending it, it seems that Baruch Honors is the wise decision here.

Fosterte-
I didn’t mean to cause concern! I feel like while Hunter provides one of the most well rounded in terms of education out of the CUNY’s, I think it is definitely the strongest in the sciences and public health. I don’t mean to say that Hunter is weak in other aspects, but i think that NEU would give me more options if I did decide to switch my major. Also, it is easier -in my opinion- to had a social life at northeastern.

Thanks for all your help. I’ve decided that there are indeed better ways to spend that $180,000 and will be attending Baruch Honors. Thank you happymomof1 for your advice, I will definitely try to take advantage of study abroad to get to experience dorming, since that was my only concern about Baruch anyway.

If I find that I’m not satisfied with Baruch, I’ll transfer to a better school, and even then at least I’ll have saved one year’s tuition. But first I will try to take advantage of all that Baruch has to offer and give it my best shot.

Good luck to you all in the college process! :)

Yay! Congrats on making a decision! I hope all goes well and that you end up LOVING the Baruch honors program! :)

@bunniesrcool: I am chosen Baruch MHC too! Hope to see you there lol

Congratulations bunniesrcool and Donald203!!! I hope you are both very happy. Good luck!
