Please help if you can!! So basically, decision day is quite literally here and I have had it down to northeastern and suny binghamton for awhile now…I really love both schools and I’ve been extremely torn between the two. I’m undecided on a major (college of arts and sciences at binghamton and undecided major at northeastern) (also honors at northeastern if that helps). I’m really interested in art/fashion but I love science too and since those are so different it’s really important to me to be able to take a lot of classes in both of these areas before deciding on a major. Both schools are about the same cost with all scholarships/grants considered so it’s basically down to what will be better for me. Binghamton was the first college I visited last year and I absolutely loved it. We visited in the dead of winter and it was probably -10 degrees that day but it just felt like home and I remember being soooo excited about the possibility of going there. I visited northeastern later in the summer and I also loved it a lot and really wanted to go but I didn’t get the same “homey” feeling I did at binghamton. Obviously this is a very subjective/probably not that important thing that could be due to a lot of factors that aren’t related to either school, but just something I’m taking into consideration. I also visited northeastern this month for an accepted students day and liked it. For some reason recently though I just keep thinking about binghamton…it’s one of those situations where objectively one school /is/ better (neu) but I just have a weird gut feeling that I should go to binghamton. I love northeastern too and I don’t want to regret not choosing it but for some inexplicable reason I feel like I’m getting pulled towards binghamton. I’ve talked about it with my family and everything and my parents really like northeastern because of the co ops obviously, which eogld especially help since I’m undecided (co op would be good) but internships are possible wherever you go. Both are good schools but if I turn down neu it will probably never have the chance to go again with all the scholarships/money I got there. Whenever I start to decide on one school, I start thinking “wait but…” About the other school. Also location- boston is ahhhhhhhhhhhmazing and I love it there and there’s sooo many opportunities (also my twin sister will be at mit there!) And I know binghamton is a lot smaller but it has a little more of a campus environment which I like too. I know this is extremely long and angsty and anxious and indecisive sounding but that’s basically how this has been for me tryna decide so if anyone at all has any input on either/both of these schools or any experiences deciding pleaSE PLEASE share!! Thank you veryyy much in advance if anyone is able to help!!! cheers
Hey! To start off, I’m a Northeastern student, so I’m probably a bit biased here - that said, I think no matter what you decide, you could probably benefit from better organizing the comparison - I figured I would try to here:
Northeastern:
Undeclared
“Objectively the Better School”
Co-op
Boston
Binghamton:
College of Arts and Sciences
More Homey Feeling
More Traditional Campus
Are there any other big draws or negatives to either you haven’t mentioned?
Personally, I have absolutely loved Northeastern - the co-op program is just as amazing as it seems on tour / visiting, sometimes even better. Boston is one of my favorite cities - it manages to feel a bit towny sometimes with the older buildings and not being quite as tall as NYC or Chicago but is really clean and has so much amazing food, places to explore, and more!
I think the feeling you get at Binghamton is valid - Northeastern is very much an urban campus and it isn’t going to give as friendly of a feel off - I wasn’t looking for that myself, and I really enjoy the architecture and the integration with Boston. I think that I find my “homey” feeling in the cool little spots around campus and in the city where I just feel really happy. They vary from coffee shops to gardens to just cool streets with outside tables.
Yesterday I finished finals, grabbed a few slices of pizza at the Pru (college cheap, 2 big slices and a drink for $7), and sat down in the garden on a beautiful day and had a really nice lunch - to me, that’s homey.

If you think you would feel at home in a similar way, I think you should go Northeastern
If you really can’t see yourself enjoying that style and absolutely do with Binghamton, then it may be the better choice despite the other advantages that NEU offers. Binghamton is a good school, even if it isn’t as good as Northeastern. College is 4 (or 5 at NEU for many) years of your life - you should enjoy it beyond just academics and career prospects if possible. Of course, as you are struggling with, both are considerations. When that’s the case, keep fit in mind still, but if you can see yourself being very happy at even the not quite as nice fit, and it has the advantages that NEU has, I think it makes sense to go Northeastern
I would probably go with your gut and go to Binghamton. But whatever you choose, never look back. You can’t make a bad decision.
