Northeastern VS Boston University

(Reposting this in hopes of more opinions)

I am just wondering what everyones opinion is on this question:

(If you were majoring in Business) and you were accepted to both, which would you choose? Boston University or Northeastern?

Ignoring anything with financial help or scholarships, just if you had a flat out choice.

Boston University for various reasons, including atmosphere, location, prestige, and the intelligence of the incoming freshman class compared to Northeastern. Northeastern is a good school, but it has a ways to go.

Being a student at Northeastern (although not a business major, and perhaps slightly biased), I would choose NEU. Although BU may have slightly higher admissions criteria than NEU, there are many advantages to attending NEU that BU simply cannot match. I was accepted to both and ending up choosing Northeastern because of a few reasons:
-Its location in Boston is far superior than that of BU
-The Co-Op program is EXCELLENT for the business program
-NEU recently broke the top 100 in US News (a big accomplishment for the school) and is rapidly improving every aspect of the university
-NEU's business program is fairly well ranked (I forget the exact number)

Feel free to ask me specific questions about Northeastern. Good luck with your decision, regardless of where you end up going.

Isn't BU's location in Boston better than NEU's? The area around NEU doesn't seem very safe..

On the contrary, NEU's surrounding area is very safe. If you look at a map of the city, you'll see that BU is on the edge of the city, bordering the Charles River. Meanwhile, NEU is in the heart of the city. Part of NEU's campus is in Back Bay, arguably the best area in Boston. The Prudential Center, Copley Square, and Newbury Street (among other places) are much closer to NEU than BU. NEU is walking distance from the Museum of Fine Arts and Boston's Avenue of the Arts.

NEU also has two "T" (subway, the main form of public transportation throughout the city) lines on its campus: Green (Huntington Avenue, "Northeastern" stop) and Orange (Ruggles stop).

We visited Boston and toured both schools. My son loved NEU and didn't want to apply to BU. That was his personal preference without weighing the relative reputations, prestige, status or stats of the schools students. So if your decision is based purely on prestige, someone else's ranking, and reputation, I guess BU still comes out ahead. Otherwise I would recommend visiting and coming to your own conclusions.

Having grown up in Massachusetts, when my daughter started looking at colleges in Boston, I subtly tried to steer her towards BU, and away from NEU. We visited both schools twice and NEU, by far, stood out in both our minds. As NJRes stated, perhaps the rankings favor BU, but if you haven't already visited both schools, you need to do so. The feel of NEU is much more campus-like, while being right in the middle of the city, and close to everything. The recent high profile donations by alumni hasn't hurt either, with several new facilities to show for it. The co-op program is highly ranked, and the increasing selectivity of students will only help NEU's rankings in the future.

I really want to visit both campuses this February, especially since it's Early Action Day at Northeastern. Maybe that will help me with my decision if BU decides to accept me

What does Early Action day mean, if i plan on applying Early Action then i should go on that day in feb.???

The thing in Feb is early action welcome day for students accepted through early action

fks1989 - early action is over, unless you are a junior and are talking about applying EA next fall.

I also live in MA and visited both colleges a couple of times. I liked the NEU location and the campus buildings far more than BU's. My instinct tells me that I'll enjoy life at NEU.

RatedPG - ya im talking about next fall, i thought that you guys were talking about open house type day that is for people that want to apply early, not the orentation for EA ppl that are already accepted

anyways, loction doesn't even matter........BU is like 5 mins from BU and the area is perfectly safe. anyways BU's campus is extremely boring. It is one really long street and thats it. NEU has an actual "campus" feel. And for business, neu would be so much better because of the co-op. it gives you so many more opportunities.

i meant "BU is 5 mins from NEU"

I'd choose Northeastern. As of today, Boston University does have a better and more widespread reputation, however, Northeastern, starting with the Class of 2011 [this years freshman class], has become just as selective [if not more so] than BU. NU is no longer the school for BU rejects, in fact a large chunk of the freshman class chose Northeastern over BU. So don't let the rankings [which are flawed, btw, but that's for another thread] fool you. BU's reputations is something its current upperclassman have over NU's upperclassman, but if you're an upcoming freshman, Northeastern is of equal footing with BU. So, given that, and NU's campus and the coop, I personally would choose Northeastern.

I visited both campuses with my daughter. She ended up choosing NEU based on the co-op opportunities as well as the location and it's proximity to all things "necessary" like Newberry Street for shopping, Prudential Center for the Cheesecake Factory, markets, and public transportation stops. She also liked the housing offered once you get past freshman year. It is by far and away better than any housing we looked at anywhere, including our home state, California. I have been to visit several times and go from the airport to campus on the T in about 20 minutes for under two dollars where it drops me off literally in front of the school. The amazing thing is that while you know you are on campus and the NEU police are everywhere for your safety, you're also in the heart of the city as well which really helps the kids to learn how to deal with everyday life negotiations and/or navigations!

Thanks for all the great info and advice. I was accepted early to NU and I am still waiting to hear back from BU. I just got back from the early action event at NU yesterday and I was stunned. I always felt New York City was superior to Boston (I was born and raised in New York) but I visited the campus with an open mind. I walked away from the event with NU being at the top of my college list. Even though it wasn't a city with giant sky scrappers, the fact that you walk our of your dorm and your surrounded by thousands of college students is amazing. The co-op program appears to be key for business majors. Plus, I can do my 6-month co-op in New York and get the best of both worlds. Anyways, thanks again for all the helpful info, I can't wait until April when I know where I'm spending the next 4 (or 5 for that matter) years of my life. I have some hard thinking to do....

Hey Jsmooth
I was also accepted early to NU and am still waiting on BU. I've also been accepted to Fordham.....so base on your paragraph, you would rather go to boston over staying in new york? I'm visiting all three schools in march....maybe that will give me a good idea.

I'm a little confused about this talk about how much more centrally located NEU is. I live near both. Just yesterday I walked from one to the other in no time at all. To choose NEU over BU to be closer to Newberry Street and downtown and such doesn't make any sense. The Prudential Center almost looms over BU. You could throw a stone from BU to Fenway and Kenmore Square.
