I’m a high school senior and deciding between Northeastern and Emory (Oxford College). I’m interesting in doing engineering, possibly mechanical. I really liked Emory’s campus and the social life at the school, but I’ve heard the 2+3 dual degree program with GT isn’t worth it. I haven’t heard as much about the COE at NEU, but I’ve heard good things about the co-op program. I’m struggling to choose between them because I also live near Boston so there’s a big difference in location. Any thoughts/opinions on either school?
If you are going to Emory for the campus and social life, how would you feel about transferring away to GT before graduation? (Note also that Emory’s Oxford campus and its social life may differ from that of Emory’s main campus as well.)
Also, a 3+2 program means 5 instead of 4 academic years of paying tuition. Financial aid at the “2” school may not be known in advance, and should not be expected to be good for an out-of-state student at a public university like GT. Also, check how difficult or competitive 3+2 transfer to GT is.
Northeastern builds its curricula around co-ops, as shown by the examples at Mechanical Engineering, BSME | Northeastern University Academic Catalog . Note that students doing more co-ops will take longer to graduate, although students would only be paying tuition for the equivalent of 8 semesters (4 academic years) if they take full course loads and stay on track with course requirements.
It’s not worth losing a year of income.
If deadest on engineering, unless you want a Masters, Emory is not the right school.
You could major in physics and do a masters tho.
But I would not choose Emory.
My son was interested but then decided on engineering and eliminated Emory from his application list. That’s a natural reaction.
Good luck.
