Northeastern vs. Northwestern

I was wondering how does Northeastern and Northwestern compare along the lines of engineering, and college life etc...

Northwestern’s engineering department is excellent. You can not go wrong with that choice.

Rankings wise Northwestern has a significantly better engineering department, and is generally regarded as a more prestigious university overall. (But that’s just rankings) I’m pretty sure Northeastern has a pretty big co-op program for most of their departments, if you’re in to that type of thing.

Northwestern by far.

Maybe Northeastern if you like Boston, but Northwestern is definitely stronger in just about every field, including engineering.

Northwestern is certainly better for engineering but Northeastern is much further east.

Northwestern > Northeastern

By far.

I think Northwestern is by far better reputation and teaching wise.

BUT with the state of the economy, doing co-op isn’t a bad idea either since it will give you work experience coming out of college which may give you an advantage over other college grads so you should definitely consider Northeastern.

Northwestern also has a co-op program which they seemed to be very proud of at the engineering information session I went to.

I don’t know how Northeastern’s works, but Northwestern’s starts Junior year (co-op students graduate senior year) and you alternate quarter’s on campus and off. They said that many of the students end up with a job after graduation but I don’t recall an actual percentage. They also said that kids come out of it having made up to $80K which is excellent for covering tuition.

So while Northeastern’s engineering co-op is quite popular, I don’t think you’d be losing anything by going to Northwestern.

Eastern has good academics. Western has better.
Eastern has an ugly campus. Western’s is beautiful.
Eastern has bad sports teams. Western is in the Big 10.
Eastern has Boston. Western has Chicago.

The only reason I would ever choose Northeastern over Northwestern is if Northwestern were financially impossible.

northeastern FTW…no, seriously?

Northeastern has an ugly campus? I don’t think so, many of the buildings on Northeastern’s campus are quite modern

Northwestern is definitely better than Northeastern

Northwestern is definitely better, but I would have to disagree that Northeastern has an ugly campus. I mean, it is not as good as Northwestern’s but it is by no means ugly.

can’t actually believe that these two schools are being compared in the same thread…love Northeastern, but academically, not in the same league as Northwestern…

Northwestern Engineering does have a strong co-op program.
Below is a list of past employers (the list is not complete since Abbott Laboratories, which hires quite a few co-ops every year, isn’t on it)

It has a unique and innovative first-year curriculum in “Engineer First”

Northeastern was rated #15 for ugliest campuses:

Northeastern University- Why do all these schools have to be so boring? For once, I’d just like to see a building that was intentionally designed trying to be beautiful, but just failed badly. We’ll see as we get further down on the list. Back to Northeastern. I don’t want to use the word drab again but in this case there really is lack of a better word. It’s gray and dull, and looks very utilitarian. As I look out the window and see the overcast sky as it starts to thunder and the General Mills factory pouring out smoke, that reminds me of Northeastern. You must not be able to find it when it rains in Boston. But I heard that they’re doing construction there, so hopefully it getting better. But its “ugly” rep will live in infamy. At least in my book.

haha rodney before you jump to conclusions, what if the OP got a full ride at northeastern and nothing at northwestern, or northeastern is closer to home?

pierre: no, I totally agree with you re: finances…it just made me laugh; my soph daughter (who knows absolutely nothing about schools yet) just asked me today the difference between Northwestern and Northeastern…I happen to know at least two unemployed NW grads and at least five very employed and successful NE grads!!!

Honestly I can’t imagine many students with these two schools on their lists. Beyond the obvious difference in admissions selectivity, academically and socially these are very different schools.

shrugs
One of my good friends applied to both Northwestern and Northeastern. I only applied and was accepted to Northeastern (honors) but my stats might’ve been good enough to slide into Northwestern too…(maybe) :p. I sort of underestimated myself application-wise. I wish I had applied to harder universities now lol…but then again, April 1st has yet to come.

I honestly think Northeastern has a nice campus; I have been surprised to see it attacked in several threads on here. Granted, I have never seen Northwestern but still…

I think Northeastern is a great school (feel free to throw stuff at me for saying so) though it might not be as highly ranked as Northwestern. The students there seem very prepared to enter the work force, move on to graduate school, or do whatever else their hearts desire :p.

not to ruin the flow of conversation :p, but what is co-op?
