I have been accepted to both schools, and was just wondering what some of the pros/cons are of each school with regard to campus/social life, academics, future job prospects, etc...
Finance is not really an issue because I got a scholarship to Northeastern which basically makes the cost equal.
Also, I was accepted to the Smeal College of Business for PSU and The College of Business Administration for NEU.
I was also wondering for both schools if it is possible to double major across colleges because i am thinking of an economics/political science double major.

My son was accepted to Northeastern and Penn State as well, but isn't even considering Penn State. They are very different! But what they both do very well is place graduates in jobs -- US New & World Report ranks them #1 and #5, respectively, for Career and Job Placement. The co-op program at NEU seems to draw kids, but I know the Penn State network is one of the best in the country. Good luck with your decision; they are both wonderful choices.

I agree with Juniper5678 it should be your choice but if i had to i would choose penn state because of its fees and because it s way better than Neu.

Son attends NU but was accepted to Penn State amongst other schools. Chose NU for various reasons; proximity to our home, co-op, city vs. rural, etc. Came down to Boston vs. University Park, PA. He finds living, working and studying in such a special place as Boston is, suits him perfectly well and NU is a great school- challenging, inspiring and well run. Plus the hockey team is rated number 3 nationally. Had to get that in!

There's no simple formula for deciding. All issues need to be weighed.

I had to make the same choice last year and I picked NEU over Penn State for reasons that Jeffreycone mentioned. NU is located in Boston, its got the city feel and there's plenty to do.. Its close to my home state, CT and also just a 4 hour drive to NYC. I wanted to work in the Northeast so Northeastern definitely has better COOP connections in New England than Penn State. Penn State is like any other state school where the college campus is the city and there is absolutely nothing around it.

Good luck with your decision! You can't go wrong either way but personally, after having spent time at NU, I'd still pick NU over Penn State. Also, I got a $10K scholarship at NU and no scholarship at Penn State which made the cost to go to both schools the same..

My daughter faced the same choice last year. She chose NEU because she thought it would have a more diverse group of people, and because so many people from her high school were planning to attend Penn State. Her friends that attend Penn State are happy there if they are into football and the sorority/fraternity thing. The downside she hears is that it is really tough to get any of the classes you want as a freshman, and that some of the classes are online. I would not be happy to spend all of that money and have her taking online classes. She could do that from home! Oh, and lots of partying at Penn State.

As for Northeastern, she is pretty happy. She loves being in Boston, but finds the Mass. kids very cliquish (we are not from Massachusetts). People are very independent and tend to do their own thing, so it is a bit harder to get the sense of a college community. There is also a lot of concern about the lack of coop opportunities due to the economy, so you may need to be flexible about your coop plans.

Actually, US News puts Penn State University Park's Smeal at 21. Above Northeastern. I'd go with US News, as it is the most respected ranking system.

When I was a high school senior I was accepted into both schools and was given a small scholarship to Northeastern. I chose Penn State, as Northeastern was one of my safety schools. I know that NEU has that co op program but many other schools have something like that as well. Penn State for example has a Washington DC program, where the school sets the students up with internships/ co ops for a semester. The only difference is that at Penn State, it is something that the student can apply to whereas in NEU, it is mandatory. No disrespect to Northeastern, but academically Penn State is the way to go

the only advantage northeastern has over penn state is the location. boston is a great place to go to school if you can afford the high living expenses. academically, penn state is head and shoulders above neu.

"thats an exaggeration lol there both real good schools, both have their specialties and also pros/cons depending on your personal needs/wants.

"head and shoulders above neu??" not really"

Yeah, collegeprep11 what are you thinking? Penn State UP is not just head and shoulders above NEU, I would also include the waist and knees above NEU as well. Penn State UP is a better school. NEU is ok for the Boston area, after schools like BU and BC, but if you planning on living anywhere else the Penn State UP degree will serve you much better..
