Hey everyone! I am an international student from Barcelona, Spain. I don't have much information and knowledge regarding college selection since I hadn't even thought about university until a week before the application deadline. Anyway... I have been accepted in the following, among others, and I'd like to know people's opinions on which one to go to:
-RIT with 15000$/year. (Rochester Institute of Technology)
-U of R no scholarship (University of Rochester)
-Northeastern University - no scholarship
Well these are my top choices. I have been accepted to others but I didn't like them when I went to visit.
The scholarships and money issues don't really matter to my parents so the scholarships don't have much weight on my decision-making process.
I am, obviously, intending to study engineering: most probably Mechanical or Electrical. I wanna be involved in educational clubs, like automotive club or aerospace (RIT is strong at these). I wanna be involved in research. Co-ops are certainly helpful since, as an international, it can help me a lot when I apply to jobs (more than to national students). Note: I want to stay in the US after college.

All three schools are going to have the types of clubs you’re looking for, as their academic strengths are in those areas. RIT and NEU have awesome co-op programs, and are probably on par with eachother, but NEU is in a major business center on the east coast. Unfortunately i’m not familiar with UofR.

What are you looking for in terms of campus atmosphere? Most obviously NEU is in a big city, RIT is in the middle of nowhere, and UofR is right next to the decent size city (which is also in the middle of nowhere).

RIT has a male/female ratio problem, and given the location and the scholars it attracts, it’s not what you would call a party school. This may or may not matter to you, depending on where your priorities lie.

NEU shares a city with alot of other universities as well, but if you’re easily distracted or dislike urban atmosphere, you’ll have a hard time adjusting.

Are you planning to campus visits?

I’m actually visiting RIT this weekend for a campus visit, so if there are questions you have, I can certainly ask for you.

Thanks! Well I have heard about the boy-girl ratio problem in RIT. I am not concerned. I have a friend there that told me that at parties there is an equal ratio cause a lot of boys are the nerd type who stay friday and saturday nights playing dungeons and dragons. And yes, RIT isn’t a party school but it doesn’t mean that you can’t find a party almost every weekend. Plus, coming form Barcelona and having partied since I’m 14 (like everyone here)… I am not looking for raging parties, otherwise I’d stay here. I obviously need and want a social life, but I’m very open and social, I’ve never had a problem with that, so I am not worried about that.
Academic-wise, which one (for engineering) is considered better?
i did a campus visit. RIT is freaking amazing. It is huge. Like a mini-city for 14000 undergrads. Northeatern’s campus was really nice too, but much smaller, and there is not as much sense f community as in RIT (I imagine cause of being in an urban city).
well, seen as you’ll be visiting this weekend, you’ll probably ask about social life and so on. If you could please tell me what they’ve told you once you get back it would be very helpful! Thanks !:D
