Northeastern?

I have just started to get really interested in Northeastern. Has anyone heard anything about their program? They offer a BA in Theatre Performance and a Music Theatre minor through the music school. Anything anyone knows or experiences people have had would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you all so much!!

My D applied there and was accepted. She applied before we actually knew much about the school, as one of her classmates was also applying and they did local interviews. But when I looked into it further it seemed like they don't even do a musical every year. Sorry to not be able to offer more info.

I know someone who loved MT, but went there for something else (sign language I think). She is now transferring because she wants to do MT. Obviously they didn't seem to have what she wanted or she would have stayed at the school and just changed majors if she could. I don't know if MT works the same way but Northeastern has an internship thing. It is a little different than regular colleges with 2 semesters-I know you do some type of working/internship while there, so check out if MT follows this type of program as well as it is a little different and I remember her being in school during Jan when most schools are on break. I know she loved its location and said the school was very nice. Sorry I didn't know more.

ooooh, not good news from either :(

well, i think i'll still apply. i'm thinking now that if i end up not getting accepted to a BFA program (yet again...) that maybe i'll do a BA and go to somewhere like Circle in the Square after college. my scholarships are so great that i won't be too much in debt after.....so it seems like it might be a good plan.

if anyone else knows anything, i would ABSOLUTELY appreciate hearing about it, whether it be good or bad!

thanks!

Sporti, if you want some BA in MT options, have you looked into:
American
Muhlenberg
Northwestern (further, I realize)
(these three have lots of what you want and also you are a good student so I think they would fit that way too)

or

UNH
Wagner
University of Southern Maine
James Madison
Indiana U (further away)

or even some place with strong theater, not necessarily a MT program, but where there is a BA theater program and then some MT opportunities?

Lots exist like:
Tufts
Skidmore
Vassar
Conn College
Sarah Lawrence
Brandeis
Middlebury
Goucher
Drew
(I don't know your academic qualifications but I recall them being quite strong given schools you applied to in round one two years ago.....could you consider Brown? I know many very talented MT kids who chose the BA route and have either chosen Brown to attend or have applied there)

yeah, i could probably consider brown. i have a 3.9 at IC right now.

it's so much to consider. i really like the idea of being in boston....so maybe i'll look into tufts. but i'll think more about brown.

thanks, susan!

maggie

Maggie...I am an alum from Tufts. I also have been back three times in recent years as my older D applied and got in there and it was one of her first choices. She loved it. She did end up at Brown as you know. When I visited Tufts with her, we visited the theater dept. presentations. Also, we got to see a student run musical of Godspell which was quite good. In looking at the bios, it was clear that not everyone in the production was a theater major by far and there are many talented college kids who didn't major in theater in college but who had very strong MT backgrounds. I also know a boy there now who has done a lot of MT but he wanted a BA school.

Also, while Brown is in Providence, it is just under an hour from Boston and so very easy to go back and forth between the two. My D has gone into Boston to see shows for the evening even. Also, Brown is about 3 1/2 hours from where you live. It is a fun small city in its own right.

I also have a strong student applying to Boston College for theater now and she has a MT and opera background. Look into what's available there too.

I hope for a BFA, you are considering Emerson. There are two girls I know from here in VT (your grade) in their program. Both have studied some with my D's (now yours also) voice teacher. If you ever need kids to talk to there...I can see if I can get you contact information, plus my D has a friend from DC who is a junior in the program.

i'm not really considering emerson too seriously. i had a really bad experience with them last year. in the end, i was accepted into the school and the honors program, but i withdrew my application because of the attitude of everyone i talked to.

i know one girl at emerson....she went to high school with your D. her initials are MB. i only know her through musical festivals, though...mostly the jazz festival. and i'm actually no longer eligible for the BFA programs since i am a transfer student.

i'll look into BC, as well, thanks!!

Maggie, I forgot about the whole transfer thing at Emerson, oops. Anyway, my D, like you, got into the school but she didn't get the BFA there.

I know MB very very very well as she is one of my D's very good friends and they went all through school together though MB was a year ahead (though my D ended up graduating with her). The summer after graduation, the two of them created and directed a MT program for youth here, including writing a cabaret revue show they directed the kids in (besides teaching acting, voice and dance). They were maybe going to do it last summer but then my D got the theater job out of state but MB still put on the program this past summer as it has been quite successful and they both made a LOT of money doing it! MB has some things in common with you as she is an excellent student (she was sal) and very good at music. She has decided to no longer do the BFA program and is in the BA program now. MB has an interesting "story" as she was a refugee from the war torn Soviet country of Georgia. We love her. Going to BFA programs is SO rare in our school and hardly anyone ever has gone onto one. I only know of two much older girls who went onto Ithaca's BFA, ironically. Then my D's year, there was MB and my D. Just to show the unpredictable nature of BFA admissions, MB applied ED to NYU/Tisch and didn't get in and then only applied to Emerson and did EA like my D and the two of them got into the school in Dec. and deferred for the BFA and then MB got into the BFA. My D didn't get the BFA at Emerson but got into the one at Tisch. Go figure. I have seen countless examples where one kid gets into X, but not Y and another kid gets into Y but not X. I don't think you have met the voice teacher's other student that my D has done theater with (who lives near where you take voice) but she is at Emerson's BFA and her initials are CM. Another example with her....she didn't get into BOCO but got into Emerson and my D got into BOCO but not Emerson's BFA. That's BFA admissions for ya. Very hard to predict. You must try out for many.

Early in the college process, my D liked Emerson and part of that, I think, was due to an overnight she did with an older MT friend (not from VT) who goes there, plus the location and all. But she hadn't visited that many BFA programs by then and half of them she didn't get to see until auditions. I really find the visits to be important because schools that were high on the list initially shifted (Emerson shifted down on her list further into the process) and others which were not as exciting on paper, shifted higher after the visits. The more she learned about other programs, Emerson started to not be as high up for various reasons. Finding the right fit is important!

As Susan said, finding the right fit is so important and there are so many options for everyone. My S is very much into MT but after visiting all the BFA schools he ultimately decided that he wanted more of a LAC with a strong theater dept.He knew he wanted to study theater, but didnt want to give up other studies as well. We started looking at schools with strong theater depts.-Susan provided you a list with many of them. He wound up falling in love with Brown and applied ED. Luckily, he got in and is now a freshman there. He is enjoying his theater experience and is also part of an a capella group which at Brown is a big social and entertainment thing. In addition, he is still able to take other courses. So, for some there are other options. You have to explore all of them so that you can find your right fit. He is happy and this is working for him. It may not be for everyone, but there are different ways to get your education and he is finding many opportunities to perform and learn.

all of this is helping me out so much....thank you, everyone!

It's certainly not Boston, but have you looked at Kenyon? My nephew is very happy there.

I think you might want to look at Plymouth State University in NH. BA in Musical Theatre, 2 hours from Boston, strong BA program.

I know some people who transferred from Northeastern becuase they didn;t like the atmosphere in the program.

I found a letter I got from Northeastern last year about their MT program:

Concentration in Musical Theatre as a Major is not possible. The Department of Music
does have a Minor in Musical Theatre. You may reach Music at 671-373-2440.

The Theatre Department produces a musical play every-other year as a general rule.
We plan a musical for the 2006-2007 academic year.
The Music Department occasionally produces an opera.
