Northeners?

I was just admitted to the business school and I was wondering how welcoming Texans are to people from, say, New York?

I'm in almost the same boat as you. I was just accepted to McCombs and I'm from NJ. I kind of like the idea of a change from the Northeast. I've visited Texas before, and everyone seems really nice (everyone is nicer than people from the NY/NJ area), and especially the Austin area is pretty diverse.

You may feel a bit out of place because so many people already know each other from their big public schools, etc. but I am in the same boat as you almost. I go to a very small private school in Dallas that is sending only 4 of us to UT this year max and I'm the only one in the B-school. For the most part, though, most people at UT and in Austin will be accepting and not really care that you aren't Texan, and may in fact find it interesting that you are different in someway from 19 out of 20 people in the UT crowd. Just enjoy it and have fun becoming an "adopted Texan."

we dont bite :)

im from austin... and i know a solid 50 people from my school that are going to UT next year, and everyone, myself included, is excited to meet people from outside our little bubble.
austin is a very welcoming place, and everyone will for the most part be glad to meet someone from outside of texas (until the get in the car... we drive almost as bad as Massh0les)

i moved here from Maine several years ago, and, with middle school drama aside, people were very friendly and welcoming. there is not, to the same extent as in the northeast, the sense that you are intruding or are unwelcome. people accepted me immediately, and have continued doing so through high school. you will find texas a pleasant surprise.
up until last year, i had my heart set on schools in new england. then i realized that texas had very quickly grown on me, and become an even better home than the one that i was missing.

congratulations if youve gotten in already, and i hope you find texas everything that it has been to me

Thanks, this makes me feel better. I guess I'm just worried about going to a place where almost everyone knows someone else.

ive never lived anywhere else but ive been to many states from up north and talked to many people and by far this is the most friendly state and austin is probably the friendliest city here in texas so dont worry about not being accepted.

I live in Dallas and will likely be 1 of maybe 3 people from my school going to UT. A lot of people are in that boat. As far as what state you're from, I cant see it making much of a difference.

Lived in Fort Worth for awhile and since the school's so big, they probably don't even care if you are from the North. I'm sure once again, texans don't bite. ^_^

As I'm sure you've heard, the students at UT Austin do not embody the stereotypical gun-toting, bible-thumping ultra-conservative Texans that seem to send chills up the spines of "northerners". Almost everyone that I know that has moved to Texas has loved it and found the people here really warm and personable.

There is even a club for OOS students!
