Northern California Send Off Party

Who’s coming to the Northern California Send-Off Party on Saturday June 29?

First time poster, long time reader here. We really want to thank this forum’s posters, we have learned so much about the U of Alabama from you.

Seems like we often read our own situation in this forum. We had no knowledge of the place before DS included it in our tour list in Feb last year. We loved the tour & campus, the more we knew the higher it climbed, and now it is the winner of the dozen we visited. And we are learning to say … Roll Tide !!

Welcome!
When you get enough posts, please PM me!

Thank you Aeromom, I’d better get busy posting. BTW, I’m the dad / proud father.

We will be there! Our son knew UA would be the school he would choose as soon as he stepped foot on campus! I just received my official “Roll Tide” license plate cover! :)

^^
Good to see another new CC member from this region!

You’ll recognize us as the family where the dad has a New Zealand accent altered by many years in the Bay Area. The rest of the family are native Californians with many other great qualities such as discovering UA!

We live in the Bay area too (SR)! We are, however, not originally from California. We’ve been here 5 years and really enjoy it though (besides the cost of living). My nephew attends UA and loves it. We really like the whole “finish in 4” concept. From what I understand, you can almost guarantee 5 years in the UC’s

We missed the send off party last year but DS loves Bama. PM me if you have questions about travel or other out of state concerns. We live in the Sacramento area.

Thanks sactonative! Does your son usually travel home for Thanksgiving? There doesn’t seem to b much time! We r really looking forward to the NorCal get-together!

DS stayed at Bama for Thanksgiving and prepared the meal in the dorm kitchen. He already informed me that he won’t be home for Thanksgiving this year too. I will advise avoiding flights that go through Denver as DS had serious delays coming home for spring break.:o

Bumping this before tomorrow’s event. What’s the number of new freshmen from California? The increase from Fall 2011 (103) to Fall 2012 (150) was pretty dramatic!

Hope they Love the UA! I am from Bham and looking to visit Southern California for the 1st time- Looking at Laguna Beach- just looking for a quiet cute beach town to see the gorgeous Pacific coast . Dropping off youngest next week and want to get away from the heat and humidity…

hlsess, if you are in Laguna Beach next week you might check out the “Pageant of the Masters” it is pretty amazing. Hope you have a good trip.

[About the Pageant | Festival of Arts Pageant of the Masters](http://www.foapom.com/pageant-of-the-masters/about-the-pageant/)

hlsess- I second the suggestion about Pageant of the Masters. It’s hard to describe, but it is a wonderful experience. I grew up in the area, and we used to go every year. Laguna is really a special place.

Here’s a further tip, if you want to see it. Most of the shows sell out way in advance. But, sometimes sponsors, board members, etc. turn their tickets back in if they will not be attending that night. You can get in line early, early each morning at the box office to buy any un-used tickets for THAT NIGHT’s performance. My family got some great seats one year for a show that was otherwise sold out.

I think they go on sale around 8am, but there will be a line well before that. There is no savings for the price of the tickets, just a chance to go to that day’s show. If you call the box office with questions in advance, they have always been very helpful.

Enjoy your trip.

ok thanks so much- have only booked room so far- may wait and just get ticket closer to time- looks like there is availability for now… the show looks really cool for after dinner… are drinks served? Looking to do a whale watching boat tour also…

If you’re staying in Laguna, it’s easiest to go to Dana Point for a whale watching tour. Here’s one that has good reviews: [Dana Point Whale Watching in Orange County, Whale Watching With Underwater Pods](http://www.dolphinsafari.com/index.html)

You may also want to check out the Sawdust Art festival since you’re in the area. Not spectacular, but certainly interesting for a couple of hours http://www.sawdustartfestival.org/

The show starts late-ish, because it needs to be dark. So, it’s perfect for an after-dinner activity. Drinks are definitely served. ;)

Here’s a good source of information on timing of the Pageant and what to bring etc:

Prime whale watching is migration periods Dec-early Jan and Feb-mid-April but you might get lucky. You will likely see dolphins and sea lions anyway.

Back on topic…can someone provide an update on who many students are from CA this year attending UA? How many attended the ‘send-off’ party? Any info is useful for next fall’s crop!

I believe there are 104 from California…a high number-maybe 80ish from Northern California. About 40 students showed up at the send-off party.

I just got back from CA and had a great time- WEatehr is incredible there! sunny and no rain:)… on my layover in Las Vegas I stopped at bar to get a drink and I look up and there is a man dressed in a Bama shirt and hat-I of course said Roll Tide Roll and we visited- he had just taken daughter to Bama- was from San Jose… he said she upgraded this year to the Highlands from the dump and I laughed and said oh yeah Tutweiler is quite the dump-my mother lived there and she is 75… haha -he said i was going to a great place and would love it!! Everyone in CA was extremely nice and helpful!!!
