Northern California Universities

So I'm planning to apply out of state to california and want to go into a Pre Med plan and major in biology.

I don't know very many colleges in california and I only want to apply to public universities in the north.

So far I plan to apply to UC Davis and maybe San Francisco State and CSU Sacramento.

Any other suggestions?

If you have the Stats, consider UC Berkley. Another UC would be UC Santa Cruz along some Cal states such as Cal Poly SLO,Chico State,SJSU, Sonoma and Humboldt. If you post your Stats, posters can give you an idea if you have a chance at any of these schools. Also, are you able to pay full price: $55K/year at a UC or $30-35K for a Cal State? UC’s and Cal states give little to no financial aid to OOS students. For Privates, University of Pacific in Stockton has a good Bio program.

Agree with Gumbymom, can you pay $55K to 60K per year for your education. OOS students pay full fees. The UC’s are funded by California taxpayers so the UC spots go to California kids first.

If you are thinking of pre-med or medical school or other health professions such as dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, etc., it is better to go to UC schools than CSU’s. Apparently, you might be going into these areas if you are majoring in biology and pre-med. A large disproportionate number of UC students go on to the medical medical schools or health fields compared to CSU students. Most of the people in these professions (young or old) I know did their undergraduate work at the UC’s compared to the CSU’s. I actually DO NOT know of anyone (I know many MD doctors, dentists, pharmacists and optometrists) who did undergraduate work at a CSU who is in these professions. I am not saying it is impossible if you are at a CSU, but you still have to do well in getting a high GPA. I am assuming you can also score high on the MCAT, PCAT, DAT, OAT etc. I am not sure why the disproportionate number of UC students over the CSU students. My guess is that the UC’s admit students in the top 9% versus the CSU’s which admit mostly students below that range. Therefore, the UC’s get the best students and if they do well (high GPA, MCAT, etc.), they get into medical school.

Admission selectivity would be the obvious reason, as the UCs are generally more selective in admissions than the CSUs. Stronger students at entry are more likely to get high GPAs and MCAT/etc. scores needed to get into medical/etc. school.

N Cal Public is a pretty short list and well captured above. If you are OOS - as others note, your tuition will be very high, possibly making privates a good option. Santa Clara would be another to add to your list.

Regarding post #4 above, I agreed that it is obvious the UC’s have high admissions selectivity and therefore there are more UC grads (who do well GPA, MCAT, etc.) going into the medical/health professions than the grads from CSU’s. I did not want to come across as an elitist by implying that highly motivated bright and smart kids go to UC’s and lesser ones go to CSU’s. Actually, the cream of the brightest kids go to HYPSM.
