well this washington post article sure popped alot of college admisions myths for me! washingtonpost.com like: we look at each student's application and admit students, not schools/districts etc'.. or
even if there are several students from the same school, they compete against the pool of applicants, not each other
or
colleges look for a rising gpa and many discount the first year ...
just interesting in this very competitive year in this competitve region to read of one person's experience
(i'll save you time..yes i know that it is only one person... yes northeren va is competitive) i'm not trying to start an argument, just sharing an article for you to read!
i can't get the link to turn blue so check out washingtonpost.com the look for jay mathews column of april 12,2008

I feel with the thousands of applications they get the colleges do put aside applications that don't meet their minimum GPA/SAT scores (unless you have a hook they want/need) -- how else can they go through so many applications in such a short time period! Then they look at what they have left and do a further screenings. And yes, it is very competitive in NOVA especially for UVA and William & Mary.

Northern Virginia is a monster. That is where I am from, and I can't help to think that the kids here can be rather over obsessive. I didn't get into UVA because I didn't take the essays seriously, but I did get into Dartmouth!

Wow, this makes me grateful about my OOS admission. Out of the eight schools applied to (including one in my state of Maine), only UVA accepted me.

That's actually really outstanding. Congrats! UVA is very hard to get into out of state. I know a Val. from one of the neighboring schools who had outstanding credentials and got rejected from UVA as an instate student.

Almost everyone who applied to UVA from my school this year got waitlisted D:

NOVA is hypercompetitive but just be glad that the state schools are worth competing over.
