Emory is open minded IF you are liberal. My latin teacher is a Southern Seperatist (believes in secession etc..) and his Philosophy Dissertation (yes, a redneck getting a Ph.D) Committee tried to get him removed from the program several times but he worked extremely hard and had to stay an extra year because the woman judging the foreign language proficiency marked him wrong on a question that all the other professors said was right just because she had a vengeance. Yeah Emory is open minded, only if you think their way. If you are conservative or a proud white southerner, good luck because apparently discrimination doesn't work both ways

Sorry, I don't buy it. Sounds like one side of a very slanted story. And what do you consider a "proud white southernor?" I have to admit, the image of a racist redneck comes to mind. And if so, you are right- racism isnt tolerated at Emory.

The (white) people I know at Emory have actually complained about rampant racism. From the "self segregation" noted at almost every school to "notably lower quality" facilities for minority clubs, frats etc, to outright raical slurring.
I myself was very interested in Emory before recieving their admissions video. Take a look at the actual statistics for who they employ and consider the employee resources for a school in Atlanta...
(I should note that the admissions vid info was from about 2 yrs ago. Maybe, hopefully things have changed)

But Emory is also known as the second Long Island, so I doubt the students are racist. I was there this past summer and none were, and I had many friends who went there.

For whoever mentioned it, Tulane is def not a Southern school, I mean, it's in the South, but the majority of kids are from the North. I guess if Northface/Lacoste wearing wealthy Jewish kids are what you are used to, there will be something like the opposite of culture shock when you arrive. I actually attend Tulane and have many friends from wealthy Boston suburb mini-hells.

I am from the South. So...it's the best of both worlds for me...

yay thats good news

yay my thread got so many posts!

anyways though, i agree with people who say emory is liberal, and i'm glad because i am very liberal as well. also when i visited/read the stats it was one of the most diverse schools i looked at, inlcluding many in new england. yeah they say theres self-segregation, but i saw people of different races hanging out together there. self-segregation is developed from choices made by individuals, and is the norm at many colleges/places in general... it jsut happens to be the way that a lot of people react to general discomfort or even just a tendency to hang out with people who are similar to themselves, but its by no means something that one would HAVE to do if they went to such a college.

anyways, thanks guys, i am convinced that i will be happy at a southern school, (esp. emory)

also serin and entitlement i havent visited tulane but its another school i'm interested in...

pssht, the north is just as racist as the south. ive met lots of kids from connecticut from all walks of life. they are just as racist as any southern hick ive ever met down here

also, my cousin lives in massachusetts and says theres a lot of racist kids, but they're more racist towards jews and other white people that blacks (mostly because theres not as many black people there)

In my opinion, it's not good to be with just liberal people if you're liberal. You should go someplace where there's a mix. Your political beliefs get much stronger when thought about in the face of opposition, or they may change. In any case, you will be more exposed to different viewpoints in a place with several conseratives as well, and this is always a good thing. I have some liberal friends who only hang out with liberals and refuse to debate their stuff...they have no idea what they're talking about.

Okay about my teacher and Emory. My teacher is definately not a racist. He is a southern white man who is proud of his heritage. He has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Emory and wrote a dissertation on Calhoun that is considered the most in depth commentary on John C. Calhoun ever, so he is not a redneck racist.

I have heard many stories of how Emory is so PC that is is unbelievable. It is a liberal school and that can't be disputed.

And the north is just as racist as the south and always have been. Even in the times of slavery, southern men were working beside the slaves but in the north, they wouldn't even let them in the state. You can disagree on this, but it is true. I have many relatives up north and I assure you that, while the racism might not be as open or directed only at blacks, it is there.

oh im not saying the north isnt racist.. or that i dont wnat to be near republicans (actually i love debating about my liberal views, dont worry they wont change though). but i do want to go to a school with an open-minded attitude, and i love emory.

(and i guess its a legit point that liberals are open-minded/accepting towards everyone but republicans haha)

That would NEVER EVER happen in the Northeast.

You've gotta be kidding me.

Now that I'm done laughing, let me address the OP.

I think seeing more of the country, and experiencing a different side of american "culture" is really broadening. It was a really wondeful part of my own college experience. It also cured me of making the embarrassingly narrow-minded and stereotypical comments people are blurting out here. The South is in some ways a different world, but it's not all bad and you will be struck with the ways people are similar as well as different. I say go for it.

LMAO, I second your laughter at such an unbased comment. I would have thought that most of you were smart enough to look past such generalizations and stereotypes. Of course there is a very small amount of people like this (as there are in the northeast, contrary to what some might say, lol), but to call the south "backward" is basically egotism and, well, just plain ignorant. Everyone has a story about racism...I have several from my trip to Philadelphia a month ago with a black friend!

Stupid media always propogating the myth that us southerners are unreformed, redneck, racists.

to the original topic: I'm in the same boat as you

I'm from New Jersey and (if admitted) will be attending the University of Texas at Austin. I'm not too worried about how people would be, because I'm probably more a southerner than a northerner in my personality anyway. I know I'd fit in there, or pretty much anywhere, there's always going to be a group of people for you anywhere.

I also applied to Pitt (which although reasonably close to NJ, is very different) and the University of Kansas (visiting this Sunday)

yeah i'm so excited about going to school in the south

and by the way i dont really know why this thread turned into a racism debate

Who knows.
I hope you love learning in the south as much as I do living in the south.
