is this a good school?

I think I'm going to apply to it as my "safety."

and my reaches will be AESD Middlesex, Lawrenceville, Taft, and Choate.

This is kind of a lot. I'm looking into all these, but I might eliminate some off my list as I get to know more about them...

NMH is very different from AESD. I'm in the camp of "good" school means right for the student. Yes, it's a good school in general terms, but if it's not right for you, then "good" doesn't matter. Same with AESD....obviosuly they are the "top" schools, but even if someone is qualified and accepted, they might not be "good" for that individual.
Probably didn't help, but in terms of comparing, again, NMH is very different from say Deerfield (it's almost neighbor). If you can, come visit them both and you'll see what I mean.

Yea, I think I might ditch that one on my list. It seems like a good school, but just doesn't seem to match me for personal reasons. One school that I overlooked before is Hotchkiss. I looked at their website very hard yesturday and I now love it for all the right reasons in benefit to myself.

As the parent of a former NMH'er and an ingoing one, I would urge you to at least take a look. When my older son was looking at bs, we looked at all of the AESD-type schools as well, and NMH was his hands-down favorite. My younger son didn't even apply anywhere else even though he was competitive to do so. The experience was second to none. We did not find them at all "alternative". The campus is gorgeous, the instructors and academics are top-notch, and the people are truly caring. My older son plans on sending his children there one day. Oh....and they are in the process of building a beautiful new arts center with theaters and dance studios.

The new additions at NMH are going to be amazing. The new Arts Center will be the best in New England...really. They are in the middle of a campaign for campus improvements and endowment and are building away over there.
With the merger of the two campuses, it is going to become more competitive again (maybe not to the level of AESD).
Like I said, it's just a little different. It is worth a visit. I know many kids who had their heart set on DA and then went to visit NMH and completely changed their minds.

Linda,
Are you affiliated with either school or do you live in the area? We are also very excited for the many upgrades/additions. I agree the downsizing will help the school become more competitive; I feel the main reason it's not in the league with the AESD's is it 's relative youth and the fact that it was founded on the principal of serving the underpriviledged and accepted minorities and the non-elite (money-wise) at a time when it was not popular to do so. This did not lead to the super-endowments that some of the more "prestigious" schools currently have, but it is an excellent school nonetheless!

They just added two beautiful new soccer fields and are in the planning stages of a new admissions building and a new field house. Also, a new hockey rink is in the works. Two new dorms were recently completed.

The new dorms are gorgeous!

Are the boxy white buildings at NMH temporary?

Are the boxy white buildings at NMH temporary?

They must be, I'm not sure where you mean?

keylyme,
I live in the area. Not affiliated officially. I know many employees and alumni and currently work for a non-profit that has an NMH senior staff person on my board. It is interesting being "local" to both NMH, Deerfield (and also actually to Stoneleigh-Burnham School and Williston) to hear what the perception of the schools is here on this board and also locally.

janemac, you may want to pm drnancie. Her D attended and graduated from NMH. I'm sure she can be of help. I believe her D was into the arts as well. Music)

Yes, the white modular buildings are temporary classrooms and were erected to enable the consolidation of the two campuses in a timely fashion.

yes, janemac you can pm me about NMH. My daughter is a musician and currently attends New England Conservatory. My older son went to exeter, and now my second son will be going to a third prep school!

I'm a student at NMH; if anyone wants to know anything about it, message me.

My daughter starts at NMH in 2 weeks...where did the summer go?

I'd suggest you have at least 2 match/safeties and apply to a max of five schools. Lots of kids are rejected or waitlisted at the top schools on your list and it's a nightmare if you don't have another option.

You might be better off choosing 3 reaches at most and spend that much more time putting together quality applications that show true interest in each school. It gets fuzzy when you're working on your 7th or 8th application and possibly 2 essays for each! It become difficult to convey sincere interest in the school when you have to stop and read the name of the school on the top of the app to remember which one you're working on!

There are several NMH posters on here who will give you solid advice. Good luck!

NMH is our 1st choice!
