Bienen School of Music is absolutely my top choice. Unfortunately, I live in NJ, and flying there for an audition just doesn't seem feasible. I know that some schools really look down on recorded auditions. Does NU have a record of discriminating against singers who send in DVDs?

If this is your top choice than this may be the audition that you splurge on and find a way to get there in person. Also, Is there any chance that Northwestern is doing an audition tour closer to you?

i thought they did regional auditions, but when i looked at the website, it seemed like it was just at northwestern or by recording.

betc – If you are a high-need student (financially) and you have terrific stats and are an accomplished musician, a trip to bienen may be the smartest fiscal investment you’ve ever made. Some students can end up with ALL of their need met by this school.

So, would a $500 train/bus/cheap flight/low-star hotel trip be worth an education that would otherwise cost $240,000 over 4 years? I think so! If it’s your TOP choice, you really want to go there, have a lesson there, and further, MAKE SURE it’s your top choice!!! The visit is not just “for them.” It’s “for you”!!!

Last year was my audition year and I was “SURE” that Northwestern was my top choice. Until I visited haha. You REALLY need to visit the school. Also unless you have lots of communication prior to and after your audition as well as a lesson with your professors of choice, you will almost certainly be placed in another studio. You really need to make connections with professors in order to get the one that you want to study with (which really is the most important thing)

You may be able to get there reasonably with advance planning. For example Southwest has $59 web fares right now for many cities.
