Northwestern BA in Theater

How is it to transfer into this program? I would like to go to Bard College at Simon’s Rock for my first two years. I also know it is easy to double major at NU. I would like to double major and I know that they have a program where I could get a BA/MA in 4 years for journalism. So, I think it would be plenty of time to get a BA in Theater. Do you think it would be enough time to get it? Do they have a showcase since it is a BA? How is NU’s program in Drama? Thanks!

I don't think you can double major in journalism and theater. The programs are in two different schools. You may be able to major in one and take courses in the other but I'm not sure. I know this is something my D was interested in when she first looked at NU.

On the website it said you can?

You can double major in some things that are in different schools, but not all. For example, my son is a Theatre major (School of Communications) with a second major in Cognitive Science (College of Arts & Sciences). Like AlliesMom mentioned, though, I don't think you can double major in two "specialty" programs like Theatre and Journalism. I don't think Medill (School of Journalism) is as flexible with their requirements as some other departments.

There used to be a Music Journalism special major, but I don't know about Theatre and Journalism together. I do know several Medill students who are very involved with theatre and music, but aren't majoring in them.

Yeah, I guess I would have to call and ask. Because it said many J majors doubled major.

Many double-major in liberal arts, not theater, to get the liberal arts education. A good journalist needs to be well-rounded and knowledgeable. They are required to take 70% of their classes outside the journalism school. So double-majoring becomes a natural and practical choice.

Would there be a way to major in theater?

You might ask, but I don’t think you can major in theater IF you are in Medill. As stated, you could be a J major and get involved with the theater community through all the various opportunities on campus (SO many incredible singing, acting, dance and improv groups IN ADDITION to the millions of top knotch productions on campus). You could be a theater major and take journalism and writing courses and perhaps, double major in English. My own D had been a theater critic for local papers when she was in HS and she was very interested in possibly combining the two interests. She got the impression that it was not possible to be in two schools (Medill and School of Communications) but that you could, as Edmondsg wrote, be a theater major with a double major in Arts and Science.

I liked NU because of the journalism program and that it had a 4 year program where you can get a BA/MA. The theater program was just a huge plus and not the main reason I liked NU. I guess I will call, but this won’t happen for another four years. I am planning on going to a early college and then transfer my junior year. I still have time, :). I liked the program for both though, since I have been acting since 6 and I would like to be an journalist.
