Northwestern, BU, USC Journalism Chances?

I'd be grateful if I got some insight on whether I have a shot at making it to these wonderful institutions! :)

ALSO..if anyone could suggest some good safeties for me, that'd be fantastic. And maybe some Journalism summer institutions that I could possibly attend.

In addition, I'm planning on attending some sort of Journalism summer institute that doesn't interfere with my family summer vacation plans.

So, what do you guys think?

USC= match

Sent from my SCH-I605 using CC

bumppppppppp

I think it looks pretty good.

What type of safeties are you looking for? Size of school, location, etc? Since those 3 are from all over the country I’ll assume location doesn’t really matter.

Consider University of Missouri, Ohio University, and Arizona State University, all top notch J-schools with pretty high acceptance rates. Look at this, it lists top J-schools and a lot of them would probably be safeties for you: [50 Best Journalism Schools and Programs at U.S. Colleges and Universities [Updated for 2013] | College Media Matters](<a href=“Welcome collegemediamatters.com - BlueHost.com”>Welcome collegemediamatters.com - BlueHost.com)

As far as summer programs, does it matter how far away they are? Washington and Lee University has one that’s relatively cheap (only about $425) and you don’t even have to apply, you just register. There’s also the Medill Cherubs, which is pretty selective and more expensive (it’s also the whole summer).

Here’s a complete list of summer journalism programs, knock yourself out: <a href=“hsj.org - This website is for sale! - hsj Resources and Information.”>hsj.org - This website is for sale! - hsj Resources and Information.;

How about University of Maryland at College Park? I have heard some good things about it from my counselor and peers, and it it also fairly close of Washington D.C, which is a stellar location for a Journalism major. Would you consider BU as a safety?

But much thanks for the insight, I appreciate it.

Sure, no problem. I forgot about U of Maryland (maybe it’s on that list I linked you to, I didn’t look at the whole thing). It definitely has a great program too, and is great because of the location. For journalism, I feel like where you go to school is most likely the general area where you’ll find a job (assuming you go straight to the workforce after college) unless you have connections to get a job elsewhere, so definitely consider where you might want to work when considering J-schools.

I think you’ve got a pretty good-great chance with University of Maryland. I think you’ve got a great shot at BU too.

I’m starting to make connections here in Florida, especially with the places I’ve been interning at. But, due to my animosity for the humid weather here, I hope to move someplace else in the future, so I’ll keep that in mind!

Sorry to be pesky, but how do you think my chances are looking for USC and Northwestern? Those are undoubtedly my two top choices.

buuuumppppp

I really don’t know that much about USC, but as far as Northwestern, I think you’re more than likely going to get in, and if you increase your SAT/ACT scores you’ve got an even better chance (though I think you could get in with your current scores).

Cool :slight_smile: I visited Northwestern about two weeks ago, and I absolutely loved it. In fact, I liked it more my visit to Northwestern more than I liked my visit to Stanford. And Medill sounds like a state-of-the-art journalism institution. I’m most likely applying to the Cherub summer program; I really hope I can get in.

Would you by any chance know the competitiveness of Northwestern’s ED applicant pool? I know that approximately 30% of ED applicants are accepted, which is astonishing for how prestigious Northwestern is. But I do know that number doesn’t necessarily signify that getting into Northwestern as an ED applicant is easy.

bumppppppppppppppp pleasee

Since you’re in Florida, UF is a great in state option for journalism. It has the second largest program despite the fact that it has only been around for 50 years. Your chances for UF are really good, even though it is known for “wacky” acceptance/denied stats.

If you want to go to Northwestern, you have a much better shot getting in ED as compared to RD. So far this year, they’ve already filled 43% of their incoming class of 2017 with early candidates. ED of course is very competitive, but it’s much easier than RD. I got in early, and I’m not sure I would have gotten in regular.

I am very aware that UF has an optimal journalism program. However, I absolutely loathe Florida’s weather, so I’m eager to get the hell out of here. UF’s one of my safeties though.

Yeah, Northwestern’s RD acceptance rate has plunged!! It’s quite shocking, but its ED acceptance rate has stayed at around 31%, so I’m most likely going to apply early, as it is my first choice for sure.

Awesome! In my (extremely biased) opinion, it’s the best school out there. But yeah, this year the expected RD acceptance rate is ~12%, which is approaching the level of some Ivies.

Hahaha I visited like two weeks ago and I’m with you. In fact, I liked my visit to Northwestern more than my visit to Stanford, which was for my brother, since I know Stanford isn’t really a good school for a journalist.

I hope that the ED rate doesn’t plunge as much as the RD rate, but I know that Northwestern really likes its ED applicants, so that’s not likely.

Don’t know exactly how competitive it is, but it is competitive…definitely apply ED if it’s your top choice, it’ll only improve your chances.

Yup, acknowledged.
