Well, NU has been my top choice for a long time now, and i just recently visited campus; it was, unfortunately, not what i was expecting. I'm hoping it's only because i overhyped it, expecting only the best. How does everyone here feel about the NU campus, and has anyone experienced the same disappointment i have only to have the campus grown on him/her? Thanks, in advance, for any input.

I'd also be interested in hearing what you all like about the campus.

Well, I think it would be helpful to know what you expected What do you consider to be only the best?

Personally, I like the small feel of the campus; its not sprawling and unwieldy like other schools can be. I love the sundry architecture, and how the campus looks in the fall/winter. To me, its a beautiful, suburban campus. My utopia. :)

um, the lake, the lagoon, the buildings, the gardens, the ivy, the paths

also the environment is really comfortable, it's like a forest within a city, bordered by a lake. the problem is, that you probably feel, is that it doesn't have a quad, which is a drawback for me, also. i always wanted a school with a quad

I love the pretty hidden away corners. I love the path by the lake. I love the flowers. I love (most of) the buildings. I love the size.
A quad would be nice, true.
The campus is soooo especially beautiful when it's covered in snow or in bloom.

I love in the fall when the ivy gets red....how pretty....I love campus. It's beautiful

I went and visted Boston University and it seriously has no campus at all...it's just a bunch of buildings that happen to be associated with the same school.

NU's campus is beautiful with the lake, the trees, the flowers...I really like it and it's better than all of the other campuses that I've been on, which is about 7 of them.

I couldn't imagine a better campus. We have an ACTUAL campus, big enough to fit a lake and a ton of dorms and buildings, but small enough that you CAN walk across the entire thing in like 15-20 minutes. We have beaches! And we have a fantastic college town RIGHT in our backyard, literally NEXT to some of the dorms, with a million restaurants and shops and a movie theater. And Chicago is right nearby for the big city feel. What more could you want?

i think the other reason you may not have liked it is that it's not entirely FLAT, like there isn't really a huge flat part you can look out over on the campus

in response to kk's post, elsijfdl said pretty much what i was anticipating in the campus. But just because it doesn't have a quad or a big open area doesn't mean that i won't end up loving the campus. It's just that, for a short 20 minute stop, i was looking for the main open area with a great view of the buildings. yes, lots of the campus was very nice, as said in the previous posts, but nothing seemed to stand out.

Jeff, did you get a chance to visit the lakefill?

I agree with dfleish completely. I love Northwestern's campus, it's walkable, it's intimate, most of the buildings are beautiful, the landscaping and view of the lake and view of Chicago is amazing, the lakefill is gorgeous most of the year... My friends came up and visited and even told me the campus was beautiful.

I, too, was disappointed with the NU Evanston campus. I went undergrad to Berkeley, which I think is much nicer.

I understand how you couldnt be happy with NU's campus....beaches, trees, pretty buildings, suburb, big city nearby, not huge, not tiny....what else can I say? So it's not in California....and there's a little something called winter....but it's gorgeous then too

elissamom,

We must have very different taste. I think Northwestern's campus is nicer than Berkeley's.

well i'm definitely not going to give up on it. I'll be taking an official tour on october 26th, so i'm looking forward to changing my mind for the better (hopefully).

I actually agree with you Jeffz26. When I visited I was pretty disappointed. I thought the buildings were ugly and the whole campus seemed really gray. All my friends who have visited agree with me, so we are definitely not alone.
But really, I think the campus in itself is not that important. I'm going to NU next year and I am absolutely thrilled and super excited. I picked NU for the smart and talented students, great faculty, big 10 sports, proximity to Chicago, etc.

I thought the campus was nice. The downside was the few concrete buildings that looked tarnished and depressing. The library, for example, is a huge eye sore in my opinion.

ohhh...but they don't take you inside the OLD library on the tour! It looks Harry Potterish. But yeah, a lot of my friends who visited weren't thrilled...
