Son has been accepted to all three schools for BME/premed (chemical engineering at CMU). Has visited Vanderbilt, will be visiting NU and CMU this weekend. Any opinions on these schools with regards to his major will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This strikes me a a choice between Northwestern and Vanderbilt (Nashville and Evanston are more appealing than Pittsburgh, and NW and Vandy are better more comprehensive universities). Northwestern is a Northern Vanderbilt and Vanderbilt is a Southern Northwestern. Academic quality is about the same. Social life is pretty similar, with both schools being fairly socially oriented. The schools won't be looked at differently by medical school admissions committees. It seems like a matter of location, if one is closer to home and your son wants to be closer to home, and gut from a visit. Most students who are going to be happy at Northwestern are going to be happy at Vanderbilt, and visa versa.

NU! no q :)

Prestige --
1.) Northwestern
2.) Vanderbilt
3.) Carnegie Mellon

Parties/Girls/Sports
1.) Vanderbilt
<gap>
2.) Northwestern
3.) Carnegie Mellon</gap>

I'd definitely go with either Northwestern or Vanderbilt.

With all the girls majoring in theatre/communications (not to mention the girls from the Northshore), NU does pretty well with regard to attractive females.

northwestern

unless it is CS&EE at CMU.
