You seem like a strong applicant, but unless you can get your GPA up, it’s going to hold you back. Also, you will need very high SAT scores to prove that your GPA does not necessarily mean you’re an underqualified applicant. GPA/SATs get your foot in the door and ECs push you through. Your chances as of now:

Northwestern - High Match/Low Reach
Columbia - High Reach (prolly reject)
NYU - Match/Low Match
JHU - High Match/Low Reach

If you don’t have any yet, you should get some safeties on your list. Good luck!

thank you! im hoping this semester to get my B in spanish up and B+ in US history up atleast half a grade. and i would assume that after SAT prep ill be able to get better scores
thanks again

I’m really doubting your chances at Columbia, your PSAT’s are barely getting by for that school, and your gpa is very low for that caliber of Ivy. NYU is probably more matchish, I’d imagine your PSAT’s are a bit above average for that school. Your gpa is low for John Hopkins, but not out of the question, so I’d say JHU and NW are reasonable reaches.

any more suggestions?
if it helps, my sophomore and freshman year grades were all A’s and A-'s
this first semester was when i got my first B in AP spanish and B+ in AP US
the gpa i posted was calculated using what college board says to use so it could be off

and im taking Calc BC next year not AB (idk if that makes much of a difference)

I would say that NYU is a match, Northwestern is somewhat of a reach, but definitely apply. Columbia and JHU would be more of a reach, but they’re both realistic reaches. Out of all, I’d say you have the best shot at NYU.
But definitely apply to all four.

Well, I basically agree with what snowgurl said, but one comment. Unless you plan on spending ridic hours studying for Anatomy, I don’t advise taking it. Is it the Excelsior College one? I’m in the class now and it’s made up of all AP students and EVERYONE is doing terrible. Even people in the top 5 of the year are getting 70’s. I’ve heard similar experiences from friends in other schools…

JHU & NYU are matches (JHU likes soccer & lacrosse players). Northwestern is unlikely RD, but a reach ED (many posters may not realize how competitive and in-demand Northwestern has become over the last two admissions cycles). Columbia is definitely a reach. I would love to know more about the Bermuda Island ecology course.

I think Northwestern is more competitive for admission than is Hopkins. I wonder why people often assume Hopkins is more competitive. Just look at the numbers:

SAT Range for Northwestern (Enrolled): 1350-1520 (Has not been updated on the collegeboard yet); Mean SAT for the entire school is 1420+

Hopkins is around a 1290-1390; Mean SAT is around a 1380-1390

That’s a pretty big difference. JHU also gives out a number of merit scholarships and is 1/2 the size of NU. Also, NU has a number of specialty schools that do not place much emphasis on test scores like an arts/sci or engineering school would.

^east coast thing and a lot of CC users are (competitive) east coasters. in reality, you can’t tell the difference. plenty have gotten accepted/accepted in one but not another and vice versa. they are pretty much the same.

thank you everyone for responding. i really appreciate it!

about the anatomy course:
i dont think its too difficult considering some of the kids from my school that have taken it. i might do a current event elective instead, i ust have to see how it fits with my schedule

about the Bermuda island ecology course:
it was a group of about 6 kids from my school and we had about 6 classes at school during the summer to learn about differnet types of reefs, fish, history of the island… and then we went to bermuda for a week and stayed at the Bermuda Biological Station For Research and snorkled at about 8 different sites and did a few labs like a coral transect lab and plankton tow

about lax at NU:
im a decent player but my team at school is horrendous. i doubt i would/could play in college so that probably wouldnt make me all too appealing to northwestern for that aspect

and in general, i think a lot of people think ohns hopkins is harder to get into than it is. no offense to my sister, but she got in with pretty ****ty sat scores and mediocre grades; her main hook was that she attended a high school run through WPI focused on math and sciences and shes a chemical engineer ma or. but she could ust be one exception
