Northwestern ED Deferral

First off, congratulations to everyone accepted to Northwestern. I applied early decision and was disheartened to find out today that I was deferred. Approximately how many people does Northwestern defer and what are the chances of getting in during this spring consideration? NU really is my first-choice so what do I have to do now as a deferred applicant to increase my odds? Now that I need to consider other colleges, what are some similar colleges? Honest answers please. Thank you so much.

December 2009

Dear *****:

The admission committee has concluded its evaluation of Early Decision applicants to Northwestern University. I am writing to let you know that we are deferring a final decision on your application until the spring.

While I realize this news may be disappointing, it is important to note that your application will be reconsidered during our Regular Decision process. As a deferred applicant, you may have questions as to what steps you can take to enhance your application. Please ensure that your counselor sends a mid-year school report with your mid-year grades as soon as they become available. If you have additional and new information you would like the admissions committee to consider, please feel free to forward any submissions to the Office of Admission by the end of January.

The admissions committee anticipates offering admission to a small number of deferred candidates. A final decision on your application will be communicated by early April. We look forward to receiving your mid-year school report and wish you the best of luck in your senior year.

Sincerely,

Christopher Watson
Dean of Undergraduate Admission

I’m on the same boat.

Same here. I must say I’m pretty disappointed.

read this and see if it helps:

I’ll reply to you soon cclolz, I’ve been on the phone and haven’t been able to check my messages.

Telescoptical, I sent you a pm with my stats, hopefully you got it. If not, let me know.

@ender, I just replied to you, let me know if it didn’t go through and I’ll re-send.

I’m deferred too. It actually makes me feel a lot better that there are more people that are deferred/but at the same time makes me feel worse. I thought they only deferred like 50 people?

My entire world literally crashed down. But after a good ten minutes of horrid disappointment, I’m like, “Okay. New plan of action. GO TIME!”

Good luck to you all. I’m really, really rooting for us.

I’m mos def getting that double-edged sword vibe. I hope they didn’t defer more applicants than usual this year. NBN reported that 30 of 60 deferres were accepted last year.

“Of the 1712 students who applied early last year, approximately 60 students were deferred. Of those 60, roughly half were later accepted.”

:)

@CC

Oops, sorry. I didn’t refresh haha. Great Future Medillian minds think alike :)

Word. So what’s your plan of attack? I think I’m taking two or three subject tests. I can study over winter break.

I was deferred as well. While I feel that it is weird that so many people have apparently been deferred, it’s probably only because so many wanted to hear other’s opinions and comments about what would be best to do now. At at least two NU events, I remembered them saying how drastically few people were deferred, and I feel they would keep the relatively same percentage as they did last year.

Nice! I’m content with my subject scores. I’ve gotten several awards since I sent the application, so I’m going to make those well known (i.e. Illinois State Scholar, Speech Team Conference tournament champ) maybe send a letter thanking them for the deferral and finding a new way to reword my love for Northwestern (even though my Why NU? essay drained them all) and perhaps send them a sample of the news show I anchor every week.

I’m not going down without a fight! Maybe you should send some of your best articles.

Yeah. I’m mos def sending some more clips and updated awards. But I have a feeling they’re more interested in my grades, which may be a problem. I’ll end the semester with nothing lower than a B+, but it’s still a B+.

Ugh. Talk about same boat.

Honestly, I don’t know how they expect applicants for the highly specialized pre-professional schools such as Medill to ejaculate straight As every semester, especially in AP and honors courses. I understand that they want us to be well-balanced with a heavy focus on journalism, but, quite frankly, I don’t think a B in Physics II my Junior year or a B in Precalculus my sophomore year should work against me.

Isn’t a deferral mainly due to grades?

That’s a very good possibility. My freshman year I screwed up and got a C, and then my sophomore year I broke my leg and had tons of surgeries, landing me with another C. I got my act together Junior year and got all A’s and took all weighted classes (we have very little APs) and my GPA is still really good. Ugh. But stupid calculus is killing me. I’m probably going to have to take the final just to keep my “B”.

I talked to an admissions counselor. She said they’re mainly looking for applicants to “maintain or improve” their current trend of grades.

I’d also like to know how many kids got deferred. I certainly feel like I have a chance if last year’s rate is maintained (30 out of 60 deferees accepted RD).

2009 seems to be the year of the deferral all of my friends at all the schools - yale, brown… are getting deferrals. I think everyone here has a good shot, keep that wildcat pride going and HAY let’s get the RD party started!! :D

Although the NU party hasn’t started where I am. I’m one of 2 kids applying to NU. :<
