Hey!! I recently got deferred from Northwestern’s ED pool and I can’t seem to find any information (stats, etc) online except for some older articles from 2009. Did anyone else get deferred/ knows of the acceptance rate of students that get deferred/ know how many students get deferred? Sorry, I’m just confused!
I was deferred as well! I would say not to hope for too much because I think they deferred a lot of applicants this year (although maybe be completely off base) and just focus on keeping first semester grades up because that’s the most important thing to the admissions office at this point. Good luck to you and other deferred applicants!
Also if you mind me asking what were your stats? Mine were like 2210 SAT/32ACT/4.5 UW GPA/ 3.8 UW GPA I had great extracurriculars and did an interview and visited the school!
i feel you fam. hopefully we’ll get in RD
I am a deferred applicant as well, and a source I know from NU said that roughly +/-100 kids were deferred this year so let’s hope for the best.
I was deferred as well and I am kinda lost. Northwestern was my top school and I don’t even want to consider my second or third choice schools.
What are your guys’ second choice schools?
My stats are-
ACT Composite- 31
English- 35
Reading- 32
Math- 27
Science- 31
UW GPA- 3.98
Solid background of extracurriculars, I felt like my essays were on point, I had them checked by 2 AP English teachers.
My schedule is tough this year, 5 AP classes. I am valedictorian of my graduating class.
I think my mistake was my choice of major. I wrote about doing a Neuroscience major as I want to do premed, but my math and science ACT scores don’t reflect my love of science. I think I should have applied as an English major instead, especially since I am taking 2 AP english classes this year.
There’s still hope for us!
“Thank you for contacting the Office of Undergraduate Admission. While we cannot guarantee that your scores will arrive in time for review, you are welcome to send results from the February test date with priority shipping. Also, you are welcome to make additions or corrections to your application by submitting them to this e-mail address. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.”
I emailed Admissions asking if they would accept ACT scores from the February test date.
The steps I’m taking are to retake the ACT for the fourth time, reworking my essays, and making sure my mid year report was completely solid.
As a parent, alum and alumni interviewer, I want to give those deferred a sense of reality, without being overly negative. As of now, half of the class of 2020 has been filled by recent ED admissions (see the link below) which will leave approximately 1025 spaces to be filled with the remaining RD applicants, as well as those deferred.
While a small of percentage of deferred students do receive an offer to attend, you should focus on your other options going forward and try to find renewed enthusiasm for your other choices. If your interest in Northwestern remains strong, your opportunity to transfer is much better than holding out hope for admission for Fall 2016. I’ve heard of many students, rejected or deferred as incoming freshmen transferring for the start of sophomore year.
I also read somewhere that they accepted over half of the deferred students one year?
@csmy97 That figure is highly unlikely. Until very recently, maybe 2-3 years ago at most, ED applicants were either accepted or rejected. There was no “deferral” and reconsideration at a later date.
I was also deferred … My stats are 3.56 UW / 3.91 W (GPA probably held my app down) and 33 ACT. I guess my essays and rec letters kept me from simply getting rejected

My S got in Northwestern last year through RD. I don’t thin it was your choice of major but ACT scores were on lower side. You probably would get in with ACT 34. Don’t give up.
@Dairybrat My early post is for you.
Has anyone’s decision status been changed? Mine is changed but it won’t let me see what the changed decision is…
@shiminator my portal changed as well I no longer see the deferral message, only a short message with an application reference number.
Same here
Looks like we’ll hear at the same time as RD applicants. I’ve heard Friday the 25th as the rumored date but take that with a grain of salt …
@shiminator @Evertim same.
on twitter NU said its safe to say decisions will come out sometime this week
