How come new students are assigned an email using the @u.northwestern.edu instead of initial-lastname@northwestern.edu? Is there anyway to get a northwestern.edu email if you have a u.northwestern.edu email?

no, but the gmail accounts are much, much, much better. Other than the slight annoyance of having the u before northwestern (you'll get over it), they're superior in every way. And you can assign up to two different aliases to the front end- I have friends who have addresses like "dave@u.northwestern.edu"

They switched the entire webmail system over to u.nu and discontinued the @northwestern.edu line. It's better now anyway because you used to lose the @northwestern.edu email after you graduated; but now, your @u.nu you can keep forever.

Plus like arbiter said, you can still use nicknames, so it's nice to have whateveryouwant@u.northwestern.edu and be able to use it forever.

I'm a little unsure how it works out, but i seem to remember that you keep the @northwestern.edu email and it forwards your mail rather than actually being an account. Is this only for people who already have them?

Yeah, that is only if you previously had an @northwestern.edu email address, so your mail didn't get screwed up. You can't get one anymore.

i'm not sure if they still give out @northwestern.edu

I have both types of e-mail. my @northwestern.edu redirects to my @u.northwestern.edu which redirects to my gmail. My digital footprint is gigante
