I am in a bind. I have to choose between Northwestern Engineering and U of I Engineering for my undergraduate degree. Both schools are great. UIUC is one of the best engineering schools in the country (#4) and Northwestern is a respectable 13th. Although U of I is a better engineering school, is Northwestern a better choice because it is more prestigious? If so, is it worth an extra $26,000/yr? lastly, I plan on going to med school after getting my undergrad engineering degree. How would those plans be affected by attending either school (better chances of getting to certain medical schools from one or the other, etc.)?

Your engineering job prospects will be similar coming out of either school so an extra 104,000 dollars probably isn't worth it. If you're going to med school realize that they probably won't cut you much slack for a lower GPA despite how difficult engineering is.

Go with UIUC for the money; your may even get lower GPA at Northwestern; profs may give out more As there but you are competing with classmates with a median SAT of 1440.

Just curious, does NU waive the engineering first series for transfers?

I would definitely go Illionois..

but then again I absolutely hated Northwestern, so I'm biased

Other than Cornell, most Ivy engineering schools are not well-rated. Does that mean that an engineering degree from Yale isn't more valuable than a degree from Illinois? The same goes for Northwestern. If you suceed there it will mean more than suceeding at Illinois.
