Northwestern Engineering vs. Univ of Illinois-Urbana Champaign

hey..im in a dilemma here...im intended to major in material engineering which both of these schools r great at..i hav doubts cause i dunno if i should accept UIUC's offer since they hav an overall great strong engineering program or Northwestern's..my concern for UIUC is that its a big public school where i've been an international student at private insitutions all my life and im afraid that i will loss myself there..

can any of u tell me wat r the pros and cons as for UIUC or Northwestern's engineering school.

Something to consider oukxela is what else is offered at the schools? Most engineering students change their mind as far as what type of degree in engineering, and some even leave engineering. Overall, UIUC and Northwestern are pretty close to the same, but Northwestern has smaller classes. Northwestern also has very good programs outside of engineering. I know two kids at Northwestern who absolutely love it, and it's very close to Chicago if you want to leave campus and do something.

do u know about getting a career after graduation? i heard that indiivduals from UIUC tends to get a better offering when they graduated engineering compared to people from Northwestern and JHU

MatSE is #1 at U of I just so you know. That is above MIT too. But try to go to each school (hard b/c you are international). They have a lot of international students at U of I so you might find more people like you there anyways making it seem smaller.

IDK what you guys are talking about, U of I may trump NW in engineering, but overall, you are crazy to think that they are the same. NW is a much more prestigious school and is regarded more highly in the academic world. Those US News rankings are full of ****, but I mean look at the Peer Assessment score and overall rank and you will find that Northwestern overall is a much better school.

While I agree that Northwestern is considered more prestigious in general, engineering at U of I is top-notch and I think everyone recognizes that.

I agree Dog87, and that's why i believe you have to look at U of I differently because you wont get a great education outside of engineering that you can at Northwestern. If you are at all worried that engineering might not be your field, and money is not an option, go to Northwestern.

Illinois is slightly better than Northwestern in Engineering and Northwestern is slightly better than Illinois overall. But in Materials, they are about even. Both have great school spirit and social life offerings, but Northwestern is much more ideally situated. I would recommend Northwestern in your case.

i would goto northwestern.

MIT/UIUC/NU haved traded ranks in the past decade. UIUC hasn't always been above NU. The three are about the same. I don't know about you; but I'd feel "trapped" in UC! Some schools that are in the middle of nowhere are pretty (think Cornell). But UIUC's campus isn't pretty to look at either.

Whoa whoa whoa it totally is don't bash. Not a big fan of NU campus here. If you're used to private institutions and having your hand held, you might be better off at NU where they would be more likely to do that.

I think most people (other than those from UIUC) would agree NU's campus is better than UIUC. NU's buildings aren't the best to look at but the lagoon, the Lake Michigan, and the general surroudings make up for it. You can see downtown Chicago from its campus also. I've seen people saying that NU's campus is nice on CC. I have yet seen one saying that about UIUC.

Do you even know what you are talking about when you used that "having your hand held" BS?? Smaller class size and more interaction with professors are beneficial, not hindrance to one's educational development. Think twice before putting this kind of nonsense.

It wasn't an insult. If he wants "personal attention" then he'll get it at NU. And who said you can't get it at UIUC. You have to try tho unlike NU and someone who isn't used to having the attention just given to them (aka private school) won't like it as much at UIUC where you have to work to get it.

Didn't mean to offend but don't bash my campus and I won't bash yours. Explaining your point on NU's campus makes it better than just saying UIUC's is crap (b/c although it may not be city, it's not crap). YOU think twice before putting down other people's colleges before I have to write more nonsense.

That's not bashing which implies element of dishonesty. I am just being honest and I don't think I have to be so PC to say every campus is pretty and nice when obviously some campuses are nicer than others. I stayed at UIUC for 5 days and the campus, as expected, situated in a very flat land and most buildings were not particularly interesting and the achitecture, if I remember right, seemed kinda random. There's practically nothing in the surrounding (no lake/river in sight..etc) to help either. Probably the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere exacerbated my negative view. Not to mention there was a slight smell of ranch (cow's pooh?) during those 5 days. ;) I saw Duke's people wrote on "Duke vs Northwestern" thread that Duke's campus is nicer. I didn't think that's bashing.
