Northwestern flute audition....UNFAIR

For what it's worth...my daughter was one of two flutists waitlisted at NU last year as a flute performance major. She too wanted to study with Mr. Kujala very very much and was heartily disappointed when she didn't come off the waitlist. BUT after six months at her current school (Hartt), she realize that she landed in a great place for her particular skill set/personality, and now she wouldn't trade. Somehow, I think things have a way of working out. So hopefully, you'll find yourself in an environment that's well suited for your talent and ability.

To nuance the point I intended above (and failed to make well) is that there is a separate Music Admissions office reviewing academic stats for prospective music majors - housed in a building with music studios, classrooms and other music administrative offices - not connected with more general university admissions. Profs do have interaction with Music Admissions and can and do influence and change certain Music Admission decisions.

The Office of Music Admissions is indeed connected with general admissions. They have a separate office because it's getting into the school as a music major is completely different from any other application process, so it makes sense to have their own office so the people in regular admissions don't have to be able to answer every question under the sun.

That does not mean that people are accepted to the Music School separately from the regular school. They make recommendations to the office of admissions and then Northwestern makes a decision. The School of Music faculty/Admissions office can not overrule the decision the larger university made.

Sorry about your denial.
