Is it possible to get an HPME application with a 1460 SAT I, no SAT IIs, 6 AP classes (junior + seniro year) and rank 1 in the school?

i'm pretty sure you NEED sat iis.....

SAT II's in Chemistry, MATH IIC, and Writing are REQUIRED. However, their is no minimum score that must be acheived. good luck!

hey buckwald you said you didn't have some SAT 2 scores when u sent your app in mid-september, yet they still sent you an app to fill out an essay... it that mainly b/c of your legacy or they thought you'd have good enough SAT 2's based on other stats?

i ask this cuz i have a 1500 SAT, 800 Math 2c, 760 Chem, but 690 writing [:(]

will that 690 writing hurt me enough not to even get an app?

hey, they sent me a card based on my 4.3 GPA and my 1510. Their was no place on the card that asked about legacy. I also think it helped that i sent in my card early. I don't think you should have a problem getting an application because they will want to see what else you bring to the table; however, i would advise taking the writing SAT II again in november- i found the Spark Notes writing test books helpful maybe you will too. i hope i answered your question, and i look forward to hopefully being classmates with you!

if anyone else needs any help about the Northwestern HPME, feel free to post i have a cousin who does HPME student interviews and is in her third year of medical school doing at Feinberg, a friend who is a freshman in HPME, and a father who does local alumni interviews for HPME, so i should be able to answer any question.

Buckwald, can u take ur SATs over in Decmber and still have them in time for Northwetsern HPME to consider them?

If I have a 1470 (720 v, 750 m) should I take it over or should i take additional SAT IIs in December?

Will being number one in your class, 1470 SAT, 750+ SAT IIs get you to an interview?

Thanks man!

The HPME card must be submitted by December 1st so be sure to note on it that you are taking a December test on that card, and they will consider that. I don't know how you did on your first three SAT IIs or how you will do if you take additional SAT IIs to determine what test you should take. For example, i don't know if you can do much better on SAT and htat was a bad test, or if you take SAT IIs if you are 800 on them and really know the material. I also do not know your extra-curriculars so it is really hard to predict whether you will get an interview. I'm sorry i could not help you further but if you wish to respond to this post im sure i can make a more accurate prediction. best of luck!

wait lemme get this straight--first i send in the regular application along with the little hpme app request card....all this before dec.1....then they send me the hpme application. when is THIS due? and appx when do they notify you of acceptance/rejection?

You have it correct- "wait lemme get this straight--first i send in the regular application along with the little hpme app request card....all this before dec.1" then the HPME Application is due on January 1st. No need to panic, i filled it all out in 1 hour (took that long because i was being meticulous). Then you may want to go to local alumni interviews in your area which would take place in December. good luck!

here are last years stats...

HPME Admitted Student Profile:
Top 1% of high school class
SAT 1 verbal 760
SAT 1 math 775
ACT composite 34
SAT II Chem. 765
SAT II Writing 750
SAT II Math 2C 785

Application Information:
Approximately 900-1000 sent inquiry cards
Approximately 700 received supplemental application
90% of applicants completed the supplemental application.
140 applicants were invited to interview
Approximately 60 students were offered admission to fill 50 spaces.

Buckwald, let me get this straight. My stats, extracurrculars, and test scores can only go so far as to give me an interview. From there my acceptance depends solely upon how I perform in the interview. Is this right?

Will these stats give me an interview:

SAT- 1480- 720v, 760m- should i retake this

SAT IIs- November

Grades/Transcript- 1/1063, biggest high school on the eastern US

EC's- Prez. of Science CLub
Prez. of Political Science Club
Founder/Captiain of Math League
Science League- Captin of CHem II team (11th grade)
Captain of Bio II Team (Present)
Writer for local newspaper and school newspaper
Red Cross Volunteer (75 hrs. around appplication due date)
Hospital VOlunteer (arouind 75 hours.)

Oh, and what type of Ecs are they looking for. SHould I volunteer more in the hospital?
And if you need more detail just tell me!
And can u please elaborate on the deadlines for this program?

Thanx a bunch

haha buckwald we keep butting in on each other's questions....paki read my question above about deadlines and buckwald's reply........regarding ur volunteer hours, i personally think you should do more.....but then would it be obvious that ur doing it b/c u need the hours??? i dunno u decide on that one...ur other ec's are pretty, i'll admit. i think they just look for leadership in the ec's that you end up participating in...

buckwald: so there are only 50 seats, but they offer 60? haha so if you're too slow in accepting their offer, then you basically lose ur acceptance? is this correct? haha how cruel... by when do you typically have to tell them that you accept/reject?

they offer 60 becuase some people turn the program down. My cousin debated Northwestern's HPME or Harvard two years ago and she decided to go to Harvard instead. So she was offered one of their 60 spots that year, however she choose not to accept it. I think that is what they mean.

so there are only 50 seats, but they offer 60? haha so if you're too slow in accepting their offer, then you basically lose ur acceptance? is this correct? haha how cruel... by when do you typically have to tell them that you accept/reject?

It simply means out of the 60 that were offered admission, 50 accepted the offer -- yield = 83% which is very high.

Considering most of these applicants also applied and likely got accepted in other accelerated medical programs, a high yield means NU's HPME is highly regarded when compared with similar programs from other schools.

oh definately it's a good program, i just took the phrase "Approximately 60 students were offered admission TO FILL 50 SPACES" differently. whatever, your interpretation is more comforting, so I guess I'll go with that! lol.

Don't you just send the inquery card first alone without the application, and then they send you the HPME application? I am pretty sure that is what they specify.

buckwald-

did ur cousin go to Whitney Young High School in downtown chicago? Someone is my school graduated 2 yrs ago who did just that. Her name was Maya.

No, my cousin went to school in New York. She is a sophmore in Medical School doing the HPME program.

just came back from a productive visit to northwestern and had a blast! the medical school is in a very nice neighborhood which is unusual and the Northwestern Football team was awesome beating Purdue!
