Northwestern HPME Part 1

Hey do you think you can also send me that ppt?? sorry if it's annoying I know a lot of people asked you!! :)

and do you mind me asking? what nationality are you?? that is so cool your dad does some interviews!!!

AND (sorry my counselor doesn't know a whole lot about the program so i've been kind of just looking around the website and such)
so you SEND IN the card, and then the NW regular application (Jan 1st), and then they see BOTH the card and the application and send the packet to you??? or just the card?
and THEN it's the interview. am I correct??

Thanks again SOO much!! :)

Buckwald--

Actually do you have a screen name or something?? AIM?? That would be so much easier :)

the HPME card is due December 1st, the Application is due January 1st you can send in both before the december deadline or just the HPME card (which takes 10 minutes to fill out max). Then once they approve of you for screaning they will send you a letter with the HPME application (its only 1 page double sided) enclosed in the letter and instructions about sending in supplemental information in another piece of paper that is enclosed in the envelope. Then once the HPME applicatoin is submitted they will select certain individuals ofr an interview. I am caucasian and I do have AIM- my screen name is SilverWarrior8, anyone reading this can IM me if they have any more questions about Northwestern's HPME.

Hi Buckwald,
Do you know how many applicant's receive HPME application and out of those how many are called for interview. Any stats on that

Application Information:
Approximately 900-1000 sent inquiry cards
Approximately 700 received supplemental application
90% of applicants completed the supplemental application.
140 applicants were invited to interview
Approximately 60 students were offered admission to fill 50 spaces.

whoa, so many people have posted.. =\ i went off to cambodia with the family... :P

hey buckwald! hm, sorry for not having been able to reply.. so i guess i'll just leave my email addy....? haha, see what happens...

its:
muchos gracias!

hey how did you get gmail??

haha it seems like the new in thing :)

i was special enough to get an invitation ;D haha just kidding, my friend got it nd had a lot left over so just started handing them out.. :P

Hello Buckwald! I wanted to ask if you could evaluate my chances of getting into good undergraduate universities. I want to apply for few ivy league colleges and premedical/medical school admissions program. Could you all also suggest good universities where I might have a chance? Here is my resume: -

Also I had a question; In this thread you mentioned that this program gives preference to some race/nationalities.
therefore I wanted to ask which nationalities are those? also are international students eligible to apply for the northwestern HPME program? What about the SAT verbal scores, are they expected to score as high as the US citizens?

Thank you for replying

hey shubham,

You have amazing stats and extracurriculars! The only thing I might suggest that if you can do well on it to take the TOEFL because it helps explain low verbal scores for international students. With your extra-curricular activities are certainly qualified for ivy league schools. With your hospital volunteering and your math and science awards, you definitely be qualified for BA/MD programs however, several of them such as Northwestern's HPME only accept students from the US and Canada. I have run accross a few good ones that do allow international applicants but I don't remember the names. I will look into which BA/MD programs allow international applicants. But whichever IVY league schools you like, you should definitely apply and i think your chances are very good! hope this helps!

Thanks for replying buckwald!
I am really encouraged by your advise. Tell me more about yourself? Your stats etc? because I know you must be having best stats and since you are so involved in helping others, i would say you have a terrific personality also.
Please advice me about the whole BS/ MD program thing, like which ones are good financially, competitively, class size etc for which International students like me can apply?

Thank you once again for helping!

Shubham

hey again,

I am a senior in high school applying to several BA/MD programs. I have a 1510 on my SAT, 700+s in SAT II's Chem, Writing, and Math IIC, and a 4.3 GPA. I applied to 7 programs and michigan (saftey school) and of these programs Northwestern's HPME is my first choice followed by George Washington's 7 year program. I think BA/MD programs are the way to go if you know that you want medicine and I would defintely take a BA/MD program such as George Washington's over Harvard; however, that is just me. BA/MD programs will garuntee you a spot in medical school before enrolling in the college! This takes away all the presure of having to compete rigourously about getting into medical school in 3 and 4 years from now. Some programs don't even set an MCAT requirement for you, and you don't have to worry about that test! It is very hard to rank these programs as they are all amazing but i'll give it a shot though this is like Princton vs. Yale- people will have different opinions. 1. Northwestern, 2. Rice, 3. Brown, 4. Case Western, 5. Penn State, 6. Boston University, 7. Lehigh University, 8. University of Southern California. I have not yet looked into all the statistics such as pricing and class size because im waiting to see where i get in, and hten I can decide based on the statistics. Unfortunitely, I have yet to find out which programs allow foreign students to apply, but I will keep looking into that. Hope this helps and when i get more info i'll reply again with it or if you have another question!

Buckwald ,

Here is my son's stats:

SAT1 - 1460 (math-800, verbal-660)
SAT II MathIIC- 800, Chem-760, taking writing in Dec.
Varsity TRack/Captain
Peer Leadership
Gold Medalist at NJ chemistry Olympia
NHS
Math Honors soc., Spanish Honors soc., various clubs
Volunteer at the hospital since 10th grade
Summer REsearch intership at NIH.

Can you evaluate his stats and please let me know if he has any chance getting into BA/MD programs

Thanks

hey mail4nrs,

your son is right on target for the higher rated BA/MD programs. He has hospital volunteer work and a research and is definitely going in the right path. I do not know his GPA, but assuming it is very good and that his application essays are good, then he should definitely get an interview at most programs and his success at the interviews will determine his acceptance. Hope this helps and I wish your son good luck!

from what i recall, i remember seeing mail4ners' son's stats in much more specific detail than is posted above, and i remember walking away feeling very impressed by those stats lol.....but buckwald you say that the stats he has posted give him a great chance--well it seems like EVERYONE who applies to the top tier programs have those stats, if not better sat i-wise (his sat iis are great). i think that when we all say that "you have a great chance at getting into progs," we really mean that "you have a great chance at getting an interview at progs..." you know? b/c if it were based on postable stats, then the whole admissions process would be nothing more than a crapshoot (which i'm praying it isn't lol).

on the online application, it asks for your indication of interest in plme. is it still necessary to submit the hpme application request card???

p.s. approximately how long does it take for the request to be processed (if i mail the hpme card along with my undergrad application)? in other words, will i get the hpme application by next wednesday if i mailed it today?

YES! it is definitely necessary to submit that card. If you do not submit that card, you will not be considered for the program, lol. That card is more important than your undergraduate application. They usually take between 1-2 weeks from the time they receive your card to the time you receive a letter with the HPME application enclosed. Good luck man!

God knows i'll need it....same to you (haha.....no comment). did you complete the hpme app (dumb question, i know you did). what does it consist of? essay questions? short answers (oh God that was annoying)? what are the essays/short answers? is there anything else that's on it? thanks so much for your unending help with all this buckwald!

This years HPME application pool seems to be fiercer than ever.

competing against papucutta, mail4nrs, .... will be tough.

By the way, I will be applying to HPME and PLME
(Most likely will go to the rival: UChicago :P

Stats:
ACT: 33
SAT II's: 750+
4 years of research--2 research projects.
siemens semi-finalist among other national awards.
2 years of research experience in a lab
good recs.
GPA: 3.65/ 4.6+
Indian

Ok-good essays.

god, i will be jumping up and down if i get an interview....
