sanguine, ur an ap scholar already???? that's impressive. how many ap's have u taken to date?

papucutta, sending in extra recs really can't hurt you as long as you don't make it excessive and send in like 5+ recs. And Northwestern's HPME app. asks specifically for an English teacher not "a teacher who can comment on your writing ability"

WAIT. for the undergrad portion, it asks for a english teacher rec??? i thought it was only a science rec!

or do we have to get more recs after receiving the hpme application? if this is the case, is it just 1 english teacher recommendation it requests or several others?

do successful applicants usually send in more than just the required science and english teacher recs? what are you guys doing?

papucutta, i guess i should've written (expected). I've taken 9 (lang, bio, chem, world history, us history, physics b, Comp sci A, us govt, european hist)

it is just 1 english teacher rec. for the HPME app. Mr. Sanguine I am have taken including the 5 this year, 16 APs; what is this award your talking about?

if u take so many ap exams and get scores of 4s and 5s, u get ap scholar awards--there are several tiers...check it out at ap central. wow how did u guys take so many aps??? i will have taken (by the end of this year) 8 ap's...haha....nervous laugh...

what did u guys do about those courses like...bio 1...chem 1...physics 1...? lol!!!

First I just want to thank everyone that's giving us information on this board because it is a big help.

So I am interested in HPME and am about to send in my application card. I think I will at least be granted an application based on my scores, but I have not taken the Chem SAT II yet because I'm taking it for the first time this year. Unfortunately, my teacher is horrible (in an AP class, at that). I believe we're way far behind where we should be, and I'm afraid that my score on the SAT II will reflect that. How low of a score would essentially eliminate me from competition for this program? I have been doing some self study, but I do not know if it will be enough. Of course, I know that ECs and such matter too, but I'm just looking for a ballpark figure. Thank you for all your help.

hmmm.....tough question which i'm sure buckwald is most qualified to answer. he has posted the average sat ii scores above so be sure to take a look at those. they are relatively high, but remember: they are averages. i would say that as long as ur other 2 scores (iic and writing) are within the 750+ range, a 680-700 would be cool with them.....but i mean ur iic and writing should be 750+ if u think u'll drop below the 700, u know? i myself kindof am in this situation--770 chem, 790 iic, but 720 writing. as u can see, my writing score is below the average, but my other two are slightly above the respective averages.....i dunno......w/e happens happens, tho.

but remember, this is hpme.......there are easier programs than hpme......lol.....

Bluefalcon,

as long as you get above a 650 you will definitely still be in contention for HPME. While some colleges such as George Washington strong preference all 700+'s, Northwestern is not one of those. You seem very self-motivated and im sure you will not be eliminated simply based on one low SAT score as long as its not below 650. Hope this helps and good luck!

Just in case everyone isn't nervous about an HPME interview, I thought I'd throw this out there. I would hate to be the woman who decided who does the HPME interviews. 1200 applicants and 120 get interviewed! Thats a 10% acceptance rate which means that if all around 20 of us who have posted about teh HPME are just like everyone else who applies, 2 of us would be asked for an interview and 1 of us would be accepted! Sorry for making you nervous, shouldn't have posted probably lol.

but of course, we being the highly motivated applicants who have found a ba/md forum for ourselves may as well be 20 of the accepted applicants!

Ok, thanks for the responses. My writing and math IIC scores are 780 and 800, so hopefully they'll balance out a bomb on the chem test. I have one more question, I'm filling out my application card and there is the blank to put in more SAT II scores. Should I put the two tests that I got 670 and 690 on it? I did somewhat poorly on them, at least in relation to most people applying to this program, so would it hurt me to put them on there or not? Thanks again for all your help.

buckwald --

national ap scholar is if you have 8 or more ap exams with a score of 4 or higher on each.

There was link on cc a while ago in the SAT/ACT forum that discussed this better.

thanks for your help mr. sanguine!

Bluefalcon,
They are going to see them when they get the score report so it doens't matter much, but if it were my application I would not list the other two.

haha--yea, i have a 650 in us history (HOW?????? i got a 5 on the ap exam taken 1 month prior to the sat ii!!! LOL). i definately did not include that on the applications.....cough cough.....

Im in the class of '06 and Im taking the new SAT. So will it be OK if I take SAT II Math IIC, bio, and chem. Or do I have to take the SAT II writing in January, prior to the new SAT?

I don't think they will make you take the Writing SAT II

buckwald wrote:

hey shubham,

You have amazing stats and extracurriculars!....however, several of them such as Northwestern's HPME only accept students from the US and Canada....

I don't think that's correct though I am not 100% sure. I remember when I was at NU, I knew this guy whom I think was not a US/Canadian citizen. I don't know what his nationality was but I know he'd lived in Malaysia, Australia, England, and Korea (where he attended HS at the time he applied). I just went to HPME's site and didn't find any statement saying that. But in "financial aid" section, it just says, "Citizens of foreign countries who are not permanent residents of the United States are not eligible for financial aid". In http://ugadm.northwestern.edu/intl/applying/ (admission page for internationals), it also mentions something about testing for HPME/ISP.
