Northwestern HPME Part 2

Hello Everyone,

I was offered a HPME application with the following grades/resume, but I was wondering how far they would get me into the HPME application process from here. Well, here it goes:

What do everyone think my chances are?

Hey all,
when reporting grades on the hpme application, it only asks for “grade” in the subject. Let’s say I got a B first semester but an A second semester, do I average the grades and put the letter grade it comes out to or do i put like “B/A”.
lol it would be really nice if I could put straight A’s on this application…

Has anyone heard from Northwestern HPME yet? Judging from past years, it seems as if it is about time for the first interview notifications to go out.

I received a HPME interview invitation this afternoon via email. So happy right now!!

How many are interviewed and how many offered last year for HPME? What are the chances?

Just got my notification. No interview for me. My numbers are pretty good (2350 SAT I, 760 Chem, 800 Math II, 4.0UW), but I don’t have a lot of related ECs, and my essays were pretty subpar. By the time I actually got around to writing them, I realized the HPME wasn’t really what I wanted, so I dgaf’d pretty hard. Given the vast number of qualified applicants, it’s pretty safe to assume that the essays make or break an application, and they definitely broke mine.

Either way, I’m not disappointed - like I said, I don’t think I would have been happy there - and it opens up a spot for one of you guys! I wish you all the best of luck :)

so i just got an invitation to interview!

Does anyone know if HPME pays for travel expenses associated with the interview?

HPME will not pay your travel etc.

Matrix - From what I heard last year, 140 interviews were offered from 2000+ applications. I believe they offer admission to 40-45 and don’t wait list anyone. If people don’t show up, the seats roll over to regular admission.

Thanks @Texas - those are scary odds :)

S got an invite a few days back!

How many people are interviewed each day? And has anybody had their interview yet?

Hey! JUST GOT CONTACTED FOR AN INTERVIEW! My parents are finally proud of me :)

Stats:
SAT - 2210 (770W, 750CR, 690M)

Class Rank - Top 50% (I know, not the best, but my school is really hard. Last year, we even sent a kid to HARVARD sigh )
Weighted GPA: 3.8 - pretty good…though I wish I had a 4.0
Senior year course load:
APES
AP Psych
AP Chem (retake) - I hope they like that I’m taking these three science classes!!
Honors Calc 1
English 12
Government and International Studies
Phys. Ed. (Presidential Athlete)

Religious affiliation: Evangelical Christian
ECs:
Ran for student body president 4 times (didn’t win, but learned a lot)
Science Club (Senior Year)
JV Track and Field (Freshman year)
Church Youth Group, Praise Team, Camp Couneslor

Essays: I think they were good. I wrote about my parents’ influence on my career decisions, and how thankful I am for all of their support.

About me: I love God, literature, and my family. I don’t enjoy science class, but I really want a career in medicine so that I can help people and uphold the family honor. I am so greatful for this opportunity. I want to learn a lot in college, but I don’t want to party or become a user. I want to grow in my faith.

Also accepted: Liberty University
Deferred: U Chicago EA
Applied to MIT, Vanderbilt, Harvey Mudd, Tulane, and Barnard

Any tips for the interview?

Any one received email confirmation of your HPME interview date? My S called and picked a date for interview, but he has not received an email confirmation yet. Hope that is ok.

My daughter’s email came a few days after setting the interview date. The contact person informed us the email would come within the week.

when are you all going for the interview? would they have a bunch of students in one day or just 1 student per day? does anyone know the interview format here?

How is this NW HPME program compared to Caltech/UCSD Medical Scholars program ?

i had 2 other people interview with me, but i think it varies depending on which day you schedule it

great phloppy95. how was the interview? how many did they call and how many seats do they have?

@phloppy95 how was your interview? Any comments on interview complexity (medium, hard), type of questions (curve ball, standard why medicine etc), how many interviewers? which of the interviewer was the toughest? Please pm. Any insights, gotchas or things to watch out for appreciated.
