I'm so conflicted right now as to the choice I have to make here. I'm 90% sure that I want to be an M.D but I love Duke so much (and it has one of the best pre-meds). Let me know your thoughts on this?

Thanks!

The question of NU vs Duke comes up a lot. Normally my answer is go to the one where you’ll be happiest at. They’re both great schools.

In your case, I have a different answer. If I understand Northwestern HPME correctly, you have been pre-admitted to an excellent medical school. At Duke you have an excellent shot at Medical School, but a number of Duke Pre-Meds are not admitted to medical school each year. Also a number who are admitted to Med Schools go to schools that have a much lesser reputation that Feinberg at NU.

TAKE THE SURE THING. Go to NU.

Something to think about. Normally, Pre-med is one of the most stresful undergrad programs. It can be cut-throat. Further, in some ways you may have to sacrifice aspects of your undergraduate program to bolster your resume for Med Schools. The HPME program removes much of this pressure – I think for most, it will be a more enjoyable undergraduate experience to not have to worry whether that B in Organic Chemistry has ruined your life.

If you love Duke then go to Duke. What if you change your mind and don’t want to become an MD?

Getting into medical school is not something I’d worry too much about coming out of Duke. If you love Duke more, that’s where you should go to college. Duke is extremely well represented at medical schools by the way, more so than Northwestern even though approximately the same number apply from both schools each year. Also, most premeds change their mind so you"ll have more flexibility at Duke where you’er not part of a rigid program like HPME.

NU’s obviously a great school as well but you don’t want to spend the rest of college thinking “what if”.
