Northwestern Legacies

How has legacy status affected your experiences with Northwestern admissions? Does the almumni assoc. offer any info or support? Do any of you legacy parents participate in the alumni interviewing as interviewers? Thanks for any info!

I'll let you know as my senior son is waiting on RD as I write.

Good luck to him!

I'll post too, later today (at least that when I presume the news will be out). My wife and I are both Kellogg grads, so we hope that counts...

My dad is an arts and sciences grad, so hopefully it'll help...I'll let you know.

doesn't a school like northwestern consider legacy less heavily than some of the ivies/stanford/duke?

both my parents attended NU for grad school and i'm sure it added a little something to my application (i was accepted ED)

NU has a strong alumni base, particularly in the journalism/media areas, and any attempt to strengthen that base will only help NU in the end. compared to the weight it might have at Yale, for instance, it's probably less so, but I'm sure it's still considered.

legacy is pretty big at NU...

jellb9 tell me more.... in what ways is it big?

We found out yesterday that our son was rejected. Quite disappointed even though NU was not his first choice. He is a National Merit Finalist and is in top 3% of a highly competitive suburban high school. All-state band. SAT scores didn't reflect as high as PSAT which may be why he was rejected-Math-690, Verbal-720, Writing-740

I'm a quadruple legacy (both parents & bro. for undergrad; sister for law; dad for med. school) and was accepted with a 33 ACT and 3.93/4.0 GPA at an uber competetive private school. Nat'l Merit Finalist, Exec. Board for two major teams--MUN and Varsity Forensics. Legacy obviously helped, but I don't think it was a critical factor. I made a big point in my statement of saying that me wanting to go to NU had zero to do with my family. I likely will not be going to NU, however, as it has no real academic program in international relations.

I plan on majoring in international affairs at NU...are u saying its not good? Should I just accept macalester for international affairs.

NU does not have an International Affairs major. It has International Area Studies. You can study IR anywhere, since its interdisciplinary, however, but what I'm talking about is an actual program geared towards foreign service, or international development, etc...like Georgetown's School of Foreign Service where I likely will be going...unless H pulls through and admits me.

It all depends what you want to do. If you want to pursue a graduate degree eventually and be a university professor for instance, you can put together politics and history and economics at NU and have as good of an education in IR as anyone else in the world... but it's just harder getting a job in that field coming from NU since it's not as well connected...unless you want to work for a multinational based in Chicago.

But seriously don't just take my word for it. I just don't want to be the five millionth person in my fam to go to NU.

My father attended Northwestern and I was accepted (my stats are on the decision page). I also want to study IR, but I want to be an attorney so I'm a little more flexible with what I study specifically. If I get into Brown, it'll be a tough choice for me between the two.

Just wanting to hear from others about your legacy outcomes...Thanks!

Any Northwestern legacies accepted RD?
