Anyone out there have any info on BMus/M Journalism degree @ Northwestern? My son mentioned that it was a program he wanted to check out. He wants to major in music theory/comp - plays tuba (obviously from my SN!). He's a bit of a late bloomer musically - but very serious about it and working hard to prepare. He's in numerous music ensembles, takes private tuba and piano lessons, etc. Academically strong w/ all honors/AP courses. We have been encouraging him to look at schools which offer more than music, so if things don't work out, he might be able to change majors without having to transfer out completely. I've read on other posts on these forums that tubas are somewhat in demand, but if he doesn't wish to major in performance, will that do him any good? Any suggestions re other schools w/ good music departments but offering double majors, or five year BM/MA or MS degrees?

NW 5-year dual degree program is BM/BA, not master's level. They do have a very highly regarded journalism school along with their well-regarded music program. Around 50% of their music majors are involved with the dual degree program.

Northwestern offers five-year programs leading to either a bachelor of arts in Music or a bachelors of music and a Masters in Journalism. Check the music school website. The fifth year is spent in the Journalism school.

How many actually graduate with two degrees?

Good question fiddlefrog. I just asked the admissions rep (LauraR) the same exact question. She is on a currently answering questions on the NU thread. Hopefully, she will answer us rather quickly.
