Hi-
I was just wondering if anyone had applied to the high school summer program. I'm applying early decision to the music program, and was wondering if anyone could give me feedback about their experiences, and how competitive it is to get in.
Thanks.

DD did 2 summer clarlinet programs during her HS years, NHSMI (summer before Jr year) & Interlochen (summer before Sr year). She gave NHSMI a "C" and an "A" to Interlochen.

NHSMI is not nearly as competitive as Interlochen, nor as intense. There was far more "down time" at NHSMI than at Interlochen.

As a tuition-paying Dad, I believe that the more rigorous program at Interlochen gave DD a taste of what a conservatory would be like. Since she thrived there, I didn't feel too nervous about her attending a conservatory, where she is now and loving it...

Overall, I agree with Zep's assessment. My D did NHSMI (as an instrumental student) the summer before senior year and was generally disappointed, but she had pretty high expectations. She had done a different summer program before and was in a good school-year program, so NHSMI wasn't as intense as she would have liked. Afterwards, I told her that I would not pay for programs like that anymore.

On the other hand, I also know of a student who went to NHSMI for voice that same summer and loved it. It was her first time at a summer music program, and Northwestern was her first choice for college. She was accepted and is now a freshman there.

I don't think it's terribly competitive to get into NHSMI, although that may depend on the instrument or voice.
