Northwestern or University of Chicago?

“Someone’s angry”

that is correct

[quote=]
I know many who have gone to both schools, including my niece. I have visited both campuses. I am aware of Goldman Sachs summer interships and the competition at both schools and how the applicants from both schools fared one year.

Bottom line is that the schools are comparable academically, but very different in social style and environment…

You must visit! NU is about a 35 minute train ride from UC. You knock them both out in one day or one weekend.

What was so offensive about that?

^^there were things written earlier in the post that were later edited out by the moderators… you obviously weren’t here when it was first written or you would understand

Ooops, my bad, sorry. Could you PM me the jist what he said, I’m curious. I’m guessing it has something to do with UC’s reputation of the place where “fun goes to die”?

no he went on a rant about me and tried to insult my intelligence… totally off topic, totally uncalled for.

Oh, ok. Thought you were overreacting a bit from what I saw. I’ll have to read the editing reasons at the bottom next time.

I think I’m gonna leave U of Chicago off my list. Maybe if I have time, I’ll take a look while I’m in Chicago visiting DePaul, Loyola, and Northwestern. I also like the fact that Northwestern is the #1 school with the most vegetarian food options (according to PETA)

Hmmm… the moderator removed my first paragraph where I commented in particular – “ad hominem” where I should have commented in GENERAL about people posting who have no particular knowledge about the subject at hand.

Now it makes the poster I offended appear to be overreacting.

Chicago is the libertarian Garden of Eden, Northwestern is typical college liberal.

Northwestern is better for journalism, not sure about communications.

"UChicago gives two types of scholarships: either $10K or full tuition (around $38k). "

I heardin this thread earlier that neither NU nor UC give merit aid. is the stmt in the above quote mean that UC does in fact give some merit aid?

I know a person whose dad is a doctor who recvd a full tuition scholarship at UC.

Nevermind, I think University of Chicago is back on my list. Dang it, I just can’t decide.

I’m going to Chicago the 1st and 2nd of July to visit colleges (Loyola, DePaul, and Northwestern) The thing is, IDK if I’ll have enough time to visit U of Chicago.

Based on what everyone has said so far, I think I like Northwestern better. I just don’t want to go to the kind of school where everyone studies CONSTANTLY. I like to be social and do other things with my life and since I would be in a big city, I would want to go out and explore often. I’ll see if I can take another day of work off in order to visit U of C also.

Should U of C even be on my list if I’m not crazy about it? I feel like I am in LOVE with my other college choices in New York.

People don’t simply study constantly in Chicago. That’s just a stereotype.

I do find that Chicago people talk often about academic subjects. Philosophy, history, math, science, politics, economics, etc. I suppose to the layman it would sound like studying, but rather it is a fun appreciation of intellectual life. If you don’t enjoy this kind of conversation then I’d say Chicago might not be as enjoyable to you.

Evanston > Hyde Park

Chicago > Northwestern (for academics)

Not sure if I can agree with this. All indications would suggest that UofC and NU are neck-and-neck in academic standard and academic prestige. Neither can really say it’s better than the other.

I do agree, however, that when it comes to social atmosphere/environment and student make up, NU has got an edge. Looks like NU students are more socially involved and outgoing, which to my understanding, have a better personality and social outlook in life. I may be generalizing though.

I’d rather go to UC than NU. it seems, at least to me, that the kids at UC are motivated by their passions for subjects and Nu students are motivated by their desires to go to graduate school. UC also has a MUCH nicer campus (unless you like the gray, uninteresting modern buildings of NU).

If we’re talking about academic prestige, the fact that UC is affiliated with a gazillion noble prize winners and has an entire school of economic thought named after it makes it much more renowned in the academic world.

80% of Chicago students go on for further education. Chicago is known as the “teacher of teachers.”

Ray192, I think most people would find the way UC counts “its” nobel winners rather sketchy. I also don’t believe UC is “much more” renowned than Northwestern. Do you believe it’s “much more” renowned than Cornell because of its economics? I don’t think so.

I’ve heard way more about UC’s research prowess than Northwestern… ever since I was in middle school, actually. And more than Cornell’s, as well. I’d say that if we limit our scope to the liberal arts, UC is more well known academically than Cornell (obviously I’ve heard more about Cornell’s research, but I’m more involved with engineering).

And yes I realize UC over-inflates its nobel winners, but it graduated 28 nobel prize winners. As far as I know, Northwestern has graduated less than 8. Like it or not, UC’s nobel prize winners bring a crap load of academic prestige. It doesn’t help that Northwestern is much more focused on professional education than UC is.

nooob - I don’t think Chicago’s campus is better than NU’s, just different. More old world and compact.

NU is on the lake, and has its own lagoon to boot. It is more spread out with a lot more trees, trails and greenery.

It’s a matter of personal taste… a chacon son gout.
