I am entering the college class of 2013 for engineering!!
I have been accepted to Northwestern, Michigan, Illinois, and Maryland (home state). I have narrowed my top two down to Northwestern and Michigan but can't decide which one to choose.

Some may say the obvious choice is Northwestern, but Michigan actually has a better engineering program. I am open to any opinions.

Electrical or mechanical. Possibly aeronautical if I dont go to Northwestern.

I know UMD has a good engineering program, but I dont want to go to school in Maryland, and I havent been terribly impressed with my campus visits :(

If cost is not a concern, Michigan and NU are roughly equal overall and in Engineering. In that case, I recommend you vist the schools and go for the school you prefer.

If cost is a concern, I agree with UCB, save the money and go to Maryland.

If you dislike Maryland a lot and are very sure about studying engineering, I would suggest Illinois or Michigan. Those two rank higher in the programs you have in mind, with Illinois being less expensive. Are you getting any financial aid (minus loans) from those schools at all?

I’m obviously not made of money and 100k is as much to me as it is to any of you. But, I really don’t want to go to UMD, and I really love UM and NU!

I visited UM last weekend, and Ill visit NU in 2 weeks (I’ve been before, but not for about 2 years) and hopefully that will help.

Did you visit? You say that both programs are excellent, so why not just visit (if you already have, visit again lol) and see which place gives you a better vibe?

From an international perspective, both UMich and NU are pretty equal in prestige, though UMich has a slight edge in engineering and law whilst NU has a slight edge in grad business. They’re pretty even for undergrad and med school. If that weigh a little… :)

You should go to Illinois. The cost is not worth any of the others when you have a GREAT engineering school in your own state. UIUC would be my choice.

Vociferous, I would agree with you except (1) the OP is a resident of Maryland, not Illinois and (2), the OP seems to come from a relatively well off family that would not mind spending extra cash.
