Waitlist: Duke

In the Duke forums, it seems like a lot more people chose Duke over NU than NU over Duke
looks like CC does have a preference for Duke

Duke doesn't have much over Northwestern other than its med school...

Northwestern over...

Washington University in St. Louis
Carnegie Mellon (Science and Humanities Scholar)
Notre Dame
Oberlin (10K scholarship)
Colgate
Case Western (about 25k in scholarships)
UIUC
Loyola Chicago

and a waitlist offer from Amherst

Illinois kid, I thought that you were going to Wash U if i remember correctly. What prompted the change? (I do think you made the 'right' decision!)

Well, my family lives very close to Northwestern in the northern suburbs. I am INTENSELY into research. They refused to pay for me to stay over and do research in the summers at Wash U, but they're giving me completely freedom to do whatever I want during the summers at NU, even if room and board costs them a fortune. I also get a ton of side benefits (ability to research 12 months of the year potentially, Chicago, a car, prior knowledge of Evanston/Chicago, etc.). So, even though I like Wash U better, life would be much easier at NU. My parents didn't give me much choice in the matter, they were really like, "We'll give you everything for NU, and almost nothing for Wash U", and after several long talks with them I agreed to take what they're giving me.

Besides, I'm intensely into the life sciences right now. A lot of people go into college loving bio, and flunking/hating it after a semester or two. What if that happens to me? I'd rather be at NU, with it's strong humanities/econ/physical science options as backups than at Wash U, which has, in my opinion, better biology, but weaker non-science offerings.

It seems Wash U is better at getting undergrads/underclassmen research positions than NU though. I just hope that I'll still have the opportunities I could've had at Wash U at NU...

that's not very nice of your parents

Yes... you're right. I did not choose my college, and I will be going to a school that I really don't think is the best fit for me and lacks some opportunities that are necessary for me and my future plans (and is NOT the cheapest either). I'm not anti-NU by any means, I just think that Wash U has stronger biology and makes research opportunities (which are necessary for me, since I want to obtain a Ph.D in Neuroscience and ultimately become a neuroscience research (yeah, I know, real likely)) more available to undergrads. NU is better for most other things though. I honestly think Wash U fits my interests much better (which is beside the point that I've lived in the shadow of NU for all my life)... but my parents will not listen and are forcing me to go to NU. But how bad can it really be, it's Northwestern for crying out loud...

yeah, northwestern's great, you'll have a great time and shouldn't be upset, i just think it's not very supportive of your parents to deny you what you really want and not support your goals.

i mean, it's not like you want to buy a motorcycle or open a casino, you're asking for help to become a NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCHER heh

daaaaang, you chose NU over JHU BME?

if that's not dedication, i don't know what is.

NU Over:

WashU

how the hell did i get in??????

illinois_kid-

i dunno much about Wash U's biology program and research opportunities, but Northwestern's biology and neuroscience programs are pretty good. Check out the Northwestern University Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program (NUIN) at http://www.northwestern.edu/nuin/

You'll find plenty of research opportunities in neuroscience from that site.

carnegie mellon
vanderbilt
UT honors engineering
tulane =) free application
USC

waitlists:

wash u - gay
caltech

duke
harvey mudd
swarthmore
cornell

Johns Hopkins (BME)
Duke
U of Florida
Georgia Tech

waitlist: georgetown, caltech

Research opportunities are proportional to the quantity and quality of the research goups at a school...it's a myth that one school makes research more available than another school unless you are talking about being paid to do research. At school's with no official undergrad research program, you just walk up and ask a professor if you can work in their group.

so don't worry about it...

For those who had chosen NU over Duke, pls read the following article.
