Northwestern Party Scene

Hi guys!

I applied to Northwestern ED this year and I want to get an idea of the party scene from actual students. Would you say that there is always a party going on? How many nights a week do people party? Are the parties fun?

Are frat parties much more fun than others?

I've heard some bad things about NU's social scene so I am starting to get a bit nervous...

I’m a freshman at NU this year and I think it really depends on where you live and what type of social scene you are in to. If you live in a dorm north campus near the frat quad, it is easier to get to parties, especially in the winter. On south campus people tend to stay in more or have their own parties. Parties are a blast, but they are also what you make of them. Not everyone goes out all the time, but there’s always something going on if you want to go out. Frat parties are really fun, but it can also be nice to go to a house party with friends.

I don’t think people south tend to have their own parties, nor would I say they tend to stay in. I live on south campus and I’m a sophomore. I wouldn’t say you have things going on during weeknights typically unless a fraternity is hosting a bar night, unless you are in a sorority and there is a formal/crush party/mixer, or unless you want to go the Deuce, a bar in Chicago, which lets in college students every Thursday night. For weekends there is usually something going on but you just have to have connections. A lot of fraternities won’t let you into the party if you don’t know a brother, unless you get there really early, in which case it isn’t fun because there aren’t that many people there yet. A lot of frat parties aren’t that great because they typically play hip hop/rap music and that’s not really the type of thing that is easy to dance to. There is a lot of standing around and staying wit your friends in my opinion. People don’t really go up to strangers and get to know them, they just stay with whoever they came with. There are also off campus parties, especially during freshman freeze (all parties are off campus then actually) and I find off campus parties to be more fun. Better music, better drinks, more mingling. As for north vs south campus, people will go out regardless of where they live if they are into that sort of thing.

I also think, however, that social scene isn’t something to really base where you want to go to college on, especially if you are applying ED.
