*Decision: Rejected (McCormick School of Engineering) *

Stats:[ul]

[] SAT IIs: Physics: 670, Math 2: 680

[] Essays: I wrote an additional essay explaining my situation during junior year
[] Teacher Recs: decent
[] Hook (if any): Absolutely nothing.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: MD
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] major strength/weakness: weakness: the fact that I am an Asian, applying for engineering to a good University... haha
[] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered:That GPA thing and the fact that I am a horrible test taker probably were the major weaknesses. Unlike schools like WashU, which actually views an applicant on all levels, I believe northwestern has a tendency to place a huge amount of the weight of a decision on grades. Not to sound too critical of Northwestern, but i'm pretty sure a test score has pretty much no indicator on your future success as a student. But, they made their decision and whatever I guess. While I don't seem to care too much, I honestly don't think that I am going to devote any more of my precious time to this university.

One last thing, I honestly think that it is so disrespectful how northwestern handled this application process. Literally every single school that I applied to had some form of checking your application status online and notified students of when their decisions would be released. Like, its very frustrating to continually be guessing about when a decision would be made. Northwestern calls itself a leader in technological innovation- so why don't they prove it? In a heartbeat they could have some random freshman computer science student make an entire system up, but they choose not to. I really hope that this has something to do with the university's desire to be consistent with how decisions were made historically, and do not stem from a lack of respect for applicants on their part.

[li] going to attend? Apparently not...[/li][/ul]**Other Factors:[ /b] Rant Concluded.

Location/Person:
[ *] State or Country: Illinois
[ *] School Type:public, 2500 ppl
[ *] Ethnicity:white
[ *] Gender:female
[ *] major strength/weakness: my strength was in test scores, gpa, class rank...all the numbers. my biggest weakness was probably that I'm pretty much the "
typical" applicant. I had nothing that made me stand out spectacularly, but I guess my numbers were enough
[ *] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered:see above
[ *] going to attend?: undecide...still waiting to hear from a couple others, but its my number one out of where I've been accepted so far

Other Factors:

[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: M
[] major strength/weakness: Weakness: lolSAT2 lit score. 490 is like 25th %ile
[] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I got no freakin' clue
[li] going to attend? we'll see![/li][/ul]Other Factors:

Decision: Accepted (McCormick SEAS)

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 770 CR, 780 M, 800 W
[] SAT IIs: 800 Math II, 800 Physics, 780 US History
[] ACT: N/A
[] GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.14 W
[] Rank: 1/137 (tied with 5 others)
[] Other stats: 5 on AP Calculus AB and AP US History
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: The Commonapp essay was very strong, as everyone who has read it invariably tell me; I agree with their assessments. The Why Northwestern essay was decent, although not my best work. I think it did a good job of showing why I wanted to attend, without soundly too generic, but I thought the writing quality could have been better than it was in the submitted version.
[] Teacher Recs: One was strong, and did a good job of making me look well-rounded. The other was very strong, basically stating I was exceptionally smart, but not arrogant. They both were helpful in presenting an aspect of me not found in the essays.
[] Counselor Rec: Very generic, but helped note how my independent-studies of APs differentiated me from others in my class.
[] Hook (if any): My main EC was writing a novel, which is halfway done. I don't think its a major hook, but it probably was something not seen on very many applications, especially to the engineering college.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Oregon
[] School Type: Rural public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Male
[] Major strength/weakness: Strengths were the numbers, especially subject test scores, as well as the novel. However, my ECs beyond that are mediocre at best; like others have noted about theirs, I don't necessarily display much passion through mine. There is the possibility I do, but I don't think so. In addition, my awards section is rather weak.
[] Why you think you were accepted/rejected/deferred: My numbers, especially the subject test scores, along with the fact I applied to an engineering school, but showed I was more than a stereotypical illiterate engineer (through the novel, as well as my CR and Writing SAT I scores).
[li] Going to attend?: Can't say definitively, although Dartmouth has sent me a likely letter, and they are currently higher on my list. It is going to require consideration of location, financial aid, and qualities of the school itself, and even more so if the high tier Ivies admit me. I won't know until the end of our period to decide on the offer.[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Maybe a slight geographical assistance from my location in Oregon, but otherwise, nothing.
