i have some free time right now so I thought I'd answer any questions anyone had

Hey, thanks for that! Can you tell me a little about the social scene? Is it pretty frat party dominated in the cold, bitter winter months, or does the weather not stop people from still wanting to go out and explore Chicago/do alternative fun things?

Second, what dorms are best for freshman? (the million dollar question)

do you yourself or through any friends know how difficult it is to participate in theatre without being an acting major? thanks man.

When you step onto campus you will make friends with people in your dorm.
Keep your door open and make friends with the people around you. Then you will do stuff with mostly those kids. The weather doesn't stop you from anything...whatever you want to do with your friends you'll do it...the weather really doesn't bother anyone.
The best dorm depends on what you want. I can't really honestly answer that without knowing what you want.

From what I understand just hearing from other people....There is one audition every quarter and all the directors and producers from the plays that they have on campus come to the audition and choose the people they want to be in those plays. I'm not sure how competitve it is...but I do know some people that did not get chosen for the plays.

thanks a lot. that sounds tough.

what is the social scene like on/around campus?

For the dorms what are typically the party dorms, quiet dorms, fun dorms, boring dorms, jocks, artsy types, etc.

yeah - what's the best dorm for freely intellectual, artsy, outgoing people?

Honestly, it's hard to find one dorm for one type of person. People can find things to love and hate about each dorm. Instead, focus on the larger and more important questions:

Do you want a big dorm or a small dorm?
Do you want a dorm or Res College?
If Res College, do you want thematic or nonspecific?
Do you want halls or suites?
Do you want to live on north or south campus?
Do you want to live with all freshmen or freshmen and sophomores?

Answering those should narrow your list down to about 5, which is how many you need to list on the application anyway. Even if some aren't that important (ie you apply to both Res Colleges AND dorms) taking even one of these items and sticking with it will significantly narrow down your choices. I think big dorm vs. small dorm is the most important factor, personally.

Going back to the musicals, do you know what playing instruments in the theater performances is like for non-music majors? Is it even possible?

enteril: i believe its possible, it's just that the music majors are likely to be better. It's all auditioned; for instance, acapella singers aren't all performing arts majors

aw, sweet. id really like to join a cappella.

Do you know how hard it is to get a spot on the The Titanic Players? (http://onegroupmind.com/thetitanicplayers/)

I like Mee-ow better :)

Long Form> Short form, though Mee-ow sounds awesome too.

mee-ow is AMAZING. end of story.

I'm also an NU soph...here are some quick notes/suggestions
DORMS:
- Party dorms: BOBB/Elder (up north)
Allison (South, this is where i lived. don't live anywhere else South campus if you want to be in the greek system, unless it's willard- even then that's a stretch...really fun, close to town and artsy classes)

if you want to go out alot do your best to get a fake ID now...every Monday tons of people go to this dive bar called the "keg", every thursday "the deuce"- these are the most dependable opportunities for going out at northwestern, at frat floor parties you kinda want to know people or its not fun

Mee-ow is great!

(sorry this is so jumbled, just had to chime in)

"Allison (South, this is where i lived. don't live anywhere else South campus if you want to be in the greek system, unless it's willard- even then that's a stretch..."

I can't follow this sentence having not attended NU. What does living in Allison have to do with wanting to be in the Greek system and why is Willard a stretch?

Please explain. You lost me.

Thanks.

Well, I disagree with the Willard being a stretch part, but I think it's because Allison and Willard are the "social" south dorms. I don't want to stereotype, but for guys, more artsy/theater people live in Jones, Chapin, etc. and rarely want to rush. Those types of girls are also usually the ones really turned off by sorority life. I am assuming the original poster means that you will lose interest in the greek system by living in dorms surrounded by such people?

That said, Willard has plenty of frat guys, and pretty much every girl I know in Willard rushed this year, if not pledged. So, that's all I can speak for.
