well some info, apparently we're getting 2 frats kicked off this year-delta upsilon and lodge, possibly. so yeah.

oh don't listen to all the "so-and-so is getting kicked off"--no one, not even the heads of the frats really know what's going on. there are three or four frats that have gotten into some serious trouble, but it's all kind of up in the air right now. a lot of my guy friends are in the few frats in question and they pretty much have no idea what's going on. you hear different things every day.

the heads of greek life has been really tough lately--a lot of frats are in big trouble and a lot of sororities are on social probation--luckily we're safe at the moment, but i know they've been looking into stuff lately so that might not stay true for very long.

I'm a mom so forgive my questions up front: Why would a sorority be on social probation? And what is "some serious trouble" in the world of fraternities?

if you're been following the depaul case, you'd know something along the lines of one of the sororities (not sure which ones) was discriminating based on looks and race for their pledge class. I'm not sure if that's applicable at NU right now, haven't heard much about it.

in terms of the serious trouble with fraternities, i'm told that trouble is when the fraternities are meeting with nationals weekly. i'm thinking maybe somehting about not upholding fraternity standards (making it look bad?). I've also been told that another is in trouble for some hazing stuff. But i'm not too sure as i'm not super involved with greek life

how would you describe someone who "fits" northwestern? I've been hearing a lot about how that matters a great amount in admissions, so since you attend the university, maybe you can give me some insight as to what they mean? Thanks.

The racist DePaul thing has nothing to do with NU. Not clear on the details regarding the social probation here but it had nothing to do with rush.

Wasn't the issue with the racism at DePauw in Indiana, not DePaul in Chicago.

It was DePauw and not DePaul.

I'm not aware of any fraternities being "racist" at NU - having had black and Hispanic friends join a no. of different fraternities (altho, there is heavy pressure for black guys who opt to go Greek to join one of the traditional black fraternities).

As for Rush - I thought that it started during Winter Q?

sorry, i may have gotten the schools mixed up. anyways i was just using that as an example of why a greek organization may get in trouble. nothing specific.

big rush is in winter quarter. for fraternities theres a smaller on in spring quarter

social probation usually results from administration finding out about drinking at social events, in the house, etc. and sororities can also get in trouble during recruitment if they don't follow the rules to a T. if you even vaguely imply that PNMs should pref your house, then you can get in trouble. this is really confusing, since that's obviously the point of rush, from a house's perspective, but the whole idea is to make it an individual choice.

in breaking greek news, a frat just got kicked off campus tonight.

Which one?
