Can anyone explain to me how it works when applying to the School of Communications at Northwestern with a declared major in theater arts? Does my application get reviewed the same as an mathematician's or with a different mindset? my GPA is not par but not bad, EC's(mostly theater involved) are very good

Each school has its own pool of applicants, and because Theater major is so much different from those of the other majors in School of Communication, I believe they will be separately reviewed.

Thank you! Good luck tomorrow! @alafae

Hi! I’m an incoming (c/o 2019) theatre major and I happen to know that applicants who are applying to the same program are reviewed together, and applicants applying to different schools and/or majors within specialty schools are not reviewed against each other. In SoC, a theatre major and an RTVF major are looked at separately since each program is distinct and capped at ~100, but a bio and psychology major applying to Weinberg would be reviewed together. Hope this helps and good luck!

Thank you @jmax13 you are so lucky you will be attending! It’s the best school ever. What were your strengths when applying?

I’m a prospective theatre major too! @jmax13 what are your stats? Congratulations on the acceptance!

@HannieMT @nuisbae thank you!! ah I honestly still can’t believe this is real

I think as far as strengths, I was not perfect but still solid across the board? I had a 2270 SAT, 33 ACT, some adequate but not amazing SAT II’s, and 3.9 GPA. Also I was really proud of my CA essay!
As for theatre stuff I’m really involved in my school’s theatre and am vice president this year, and my director wrote me a recommendation letter that fit everything I couldn’t fit into the CA about my department, like that it’s regionally acclaimed and what shows I’ve been cast in/a part of and etc. But honestly I was watching some interview about college admissions and someone said that “each school was made for a reason and looks for a certain kind of student, but they won’t outright tell you who,” and I honestly just think I figured out that was true for me and Northwestern and used my NU essay to explain how well their theatre major and quarter system and academic opportunities fit me.

This got kind of long winded but basically, stats are great but use your essays, ECs, and recommendations to really sell you, and good luck guys! I hope I see you at school next year :)
