Northwestern Thread for Transfer Students

Hi I’m currently a permanent resident of the US and at the time I applied to NU I was an international student asking for financial aid who applied into biomedical engineering. I am planning on enrolling at Harper College, a community college, for financial reasons and was wondering if you could chance me for the 2012-13 fall.

my stats are:

Reflection
Strengths: Test Scores, Awards from activities
Weaknesses: Applying for financial aid as an international, community service, varied EC
Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Applying for financial aid as an international
Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted:
UIUC UIC Accepted WashU Cornell Waitlisted

Thanks for the reply

Also I am wondering if they would look poorly upon a community college and how difficult it is to get financial aid.

Of NU’s transfers, 10% come from CCs and the other 90% from 4-year institutions. However, given your HS credentials, I don’t see why you wouldn’t fit into that 10% threshold.

I assumed only 10% of people were accepted from CC since people from 4-year institutions on average are smarter with better credentials to get into NU. Also how would financial aid be.

I think most of the people who are applying to NU from community colleges are going to be students who could have gone to a 4 year school out of high school, but could not have gotten into a T25 or so school so they went to CC for whatever reason. And the ones who get accepted will be the handful like littleindia70 who have the excellent HS statistics to complement a near perfect CC GPA.

It would be interesting to see how a CC student with a 3.9+ GPA would stack up against a student applying from a 4 year school not ranked in the T50 (e.g. Boston U, American, Iowa State) with a similar college GPA when they both have identical HS credentials.

I think the people in the best position will be the ones applying from T25 Universities/Liberal Arts Colleges to NU because they will already have excellent HS GPAs, SAT scores and ECs by default so their College GPA can afford to be as low as the 3.3 range. (I would think)

^ I’m getting the impression they expect 3.8’s/3.9’s from top-tier universities/LAC’s too…

^ I don’t know. I think the perceived rigor of their academic program (students transferring from the top-tier schools) will allow them to have a slightly lower GPA than CC students or students from lower ranked 4-year schools and still get admitted. I get the impression that a student with a 3.7+ GPA from a T25 University/LAC would be a shoe in for Northwestern while a student coming from a CC or “lesser” 4 year will need as close to a 4.0 as possible, great recommendations, ECs and great essays to even be a borderline candidate.

Maybe. It still seems very challenging for those in the 3.3-3.5 range, and even for those in the 3.5-3.7 range.

I know someone who got in with a 3.8 from a school that isn’t ranked in the top 100. I also know someone who got in with a 3.65 from a school that’s not top 50. Regarding top 25s, I doubt a 3.3 from a top 25 would trump a 3.7+ from an average university.

So what I’m getting is that I will be put at a disadvantage since I am applying from a CC? Also could someone please explain how financial aid will work? I am applying for a major in biomedical engineering once again and was wondering if it is looked down upon if i reapply after I was denied (which I highly feel was because of applying for financial aid as an international). Also does anyone know if BME is one of the majors where many kids drop out opening many spots for transfers because a friend at NU told me this is true and I am trying to confirm

NU doesn’t accept students based on their major but rather the college they’re applying to; that’s the notion I received from an admissions counselor. He explained the WCAS accepts the most transfers because it’s the biggest college at NU. That said, applying to McCormick does not put you at a huge disadvantage as they do accept transfers into McCormick, but they simply have less space available in comparison to WCAS.

Can we let this thread die again? There’s already one for 2011.

Not being a nazi saying ONLY HAVE ONE THREAD but its confusing having 2 active threads. This one does have information, but is “old.”

dear tenisghs,
i am a freshman and pasadena city college and i am considering to possibly transfer to northwestern and i was just wondering or rather clarifying if you HAVE to send your SAT scores from high school? i am a horrible test and have ADHD and a mild case of CP so i know i should mention that in my application even though it might not be for a year or two im just trying to make a list. if you respond to this this will help me immensely!!! thank you so much!!!

Hi, I am thinking of transferring to Northwestern after the freshman year. What are some advices that you could give me? What is the competitive college gpa and how much does SAT or ACt take part?
